Show Millard Business of the Week Meet the Pat Manis says “I service you well!” by Dawn Carder The Missionary President told him “You deal well with people and you have the ability to be able to communicate with and explain to them Why not try the insurance business?” Pat Manis took the advice and today he is successfully heading his own Insurance Company-Main Street in Delta Pat a Hinckley native attended Dixie College in St George for one year after graduating from Delta High School College was interrupted when he went to Ireland to serve a mission for the LDS Church Returning to Utah he had various odd jobs in Salt Lake City until he launched to insurance In 1974 Pat began working with Rushmore Insurance in Salt Lake A few months later he and Linda were married and soon after the two began to think of returning to Hinckley The move was made in May 1975 At the time Pat returned home his father owned the Hinckley Service station So from June through November of that year Pat ran his father’s business AND sold insurance from his home While Pat was operating from the house Linda learned a great deal about the insurance business working with her husband and fast becoming an integral part of the operation In November 1975 Pat discontinued running the service station and went to work full time for National Farmers Union Insurance Company He remained with that organization until May of 1979 at which time was formed Dixie Leavitt the principal owner has a network of surance agencies located in Nevada Arizona and Utah He had contacted Pat and the latter determined that he wanted to go with the Leavitt group Such a union brought many companies from whom a variety of services could be offered and provided for Pat’s clients When was formed Pat moved his office into the Bunker Complex in Delta That was in May 1979 The following May the company bought the house that is the present location and Pat moved in late summer in is a corporation which Leavitt owns 60 percent and Pat Manis owns 40 percent After moving to the present spot the house was completely remodeled then in the summer of 1984 an addition (present home of was built and the building next door was purchased as an investment Becoming an insurance agent passing exams and quires study becoming licensed Initially Pat Manis took a three weeks course in Rushmore South Dakota The course was followed by an examination and licensure Since that time Pat has continued to take classes Presently he is working toward becoming a Certified Insurance Counselor For this he must school sesattend intensified sions in Salt Lake City On the third written exam day he takes a In order to get the CIC certificate Pat He must past seven examinations estimates that this will take another two years of study to accomplish The purpose in Pat's estimation of becoming a CIC is to professionally know the insurance business more thoroughly and to better help clients Instruction covers computers legal counseling accounting and knowledge of various companies And the State of Utah has a continuing education for agents to maintain quirement licenses There are according to Pat two direct types of insurance agents--writer who is an employee of a company and an independent agent who owms hisher own business The latter can place clients with any company choosing the one best suited to the Inc is needs Basically an independent organization a client may Through get any type of insurance needed for house life Pat offers multi to health commercial Now that he is established does Pat Manis feel that he can sit back and relax? No way! “I continue to beat the horses” All in all Pat Manis has a pretty full life and Insurance Inc is a most important aspect of that life To his clients he reiterates “I service you well!” Youth experience encouragement and success through program at CUMH by Dawn Carder Twelve area young people ages 10 through 17 are experiences encouragement and success through a program sponsored by Central Utah Mental Frances Health Potts therapist started the group last August and she was been joined in leadership on December by Ellen Roholt whose responsibilities at CUMH are prevention and education The program is geared toward delinquent youth and others who are having trouble in school andor at home Many are dealing with their own or with alcohol family involvements andor drugs Some were initially referred but according to Potts all the young people now in the group are there by choice As one might surmise the young people were initially very unsure of themselves and the program Suffering some from feelings of low were “loners” others had poor school performance Through the group they have experienced support and now are more positive looking forward to meeting together each week Once a week Frances Potts Ellen Roholt and the young people meet for a four hour period of time The sessions are geared to change attitudes and behavior from negative to positive The two leaders help the kids set goals that help them function more effectively Special talents are recognized and emphasized help is given in the establishand ment of better study habits responsibility is taught and practiced Therapeutic games are employed to teach the youth problem solving skills One evening each group member made hisher own commercial on alcohol or drugs This activity required doing research preparing the presentation then standing up in front of the group AND the camera (each commercial was to deliver Another session by Dawn Carder The Rev Mr Warren Fikejs pastor Delta Community Presbyterian Church and Mrs Fikejs will host fifteen ministers and their wives in Delta on Sunday February 21 and Monday February 22 This is a first for the Delta area! 4 Shellie the third of Lyla Rae and Larry Morris’ six children grew up in Hinckley where she attended elementary school Her career at the Chronicle actually began when she was a senior at Delta High and participating Her initial in the program responsibilities were type setting doing PMTs and some paste up work from DHS Following graduation Shellie attended the Trade Tech in Provo for a brief period of time before going to work for Universal Graphics in the same city There she learned the art of screen printing applied to posters and stickers After a year in Provo Shellie returned to the Delta area and to the ChroniHer work duties cle Progress as before covered setting type selling ads doing PMTs and helping with J Shellie As luck for the paper would have a Shellie married Lewis Dutson son of Chronicle Progress editorowner Sue Dutson in August of 1980 Thus the BeckwithDutson family tradition in the local newspaper business was enhanced strengthened and continued the Along way Shellie worked at Dutson by Dawn Carder staff is The Chronicle Progress positively influenced by the presence of Shellie Dutson expert printer Shellie usually buzzes into the office in an excited manner eyes flashing and gesturing as she says “Hi there!
