Porter Marshall Sheriff and the other team members have worked very hard deserving the recognition and support of Delians of every age Police Chief sets the record straight Roger J Young Chief of Police Delta City While reading the Millard County Chronicle Progress this past week I was impressed with Commissioner Styler’s reply to the East Millard of Commerce Chamber meeting However I feel the same surprise and that Commissioner disappointment I when felt his read statement on Styler the budget for the Delta City Police Commissioner Styler Department dicated that Delta has budgeted for law enforcement this $35100000 year The actual budget for the Delta City Police Department for this budget The police departyear is $19800000 ment operates a department with an officer on every shift The ofdepartment employes 5 ficers and full time secretary The entire operation is run on that budget of not $35100000 as quoted $19800000 by Commissioner Styler The officers of the Delta City Police Department do not receive any type of overtime pay in our budget because of the Extra training for the officers has been eliminated because there is no money to send officers to schools I have not attended any training seminars that are for Police Chiefs in an attempt to live within the $19800000 budget There no surplus in our budget and I am not sure where Commissioner Styler came up with his figures but I do know that he did not ask me I feel that the Delta City Police Department has been done an injustice in this respect as it makes it look like we are rolling in money and in fact we are just making ends meet Our budget is open to public review If anyone feels the need to look at the bottom line figures I will be more than happy to show them This also includes Commissioner Styler is Bob Oppenheimer Master -- Trapper Bob Oppenheimer and his "critters” by Dawn Carder The National Wool Growers Association honored Delta resident Bob Oppenheimer by selecting him as Master Trapper for the 1987 year The award is “presented to an animal damage control practitioner whose skills and dedication have distinguished him and who exhibits special control skills an interest in the sheep dustry and a special degree of cooperation that sets him apart” Bob was formally recognized at the National Wool Growers Convention held in San Antonio Texas on January 20 1988 Between 1200 and 1500 wool growers attended the awards banquet where Bob was presented with a plaque for his accomplishments Roy McDonald District Supervisor and Gary Larson Utah State Director were responsible for nominating Bob for this recognition Appearing reluctant to receive much praise or to be in the limelight Bob Opthe penheimer kept emphasizing superior caliber of people with whom he is associated in his work "I work with the best people in the world” he said “There are the best airplane and helicopter crews the best livestock people It’s just a good outfit with top caliber people I’m not looking forward to retirement because I will miss the association with all these people” A native of Lockport Illinois Bob moved to Delta when he was a very small boy He farmed for awhile then with nothing to do he began to trap That’s when he began to enjoy every day’s work Trapping is definitely Bob’s thing and as he reiterated “I enjoy every r day” For years he worked for the federal Animal Damage Control Program serving as the District Supervisor Following his retirement from ADC he has worked for the State of Utah as a and fulltime trapper for five years Trapping is unfamiliar to an easterner so quietly and patiently Bob explained his work Livestock owners make a business from their animals these people depend on Consequently of their trappers for protection livestock During the winter months according to Bob the main predator problems are created by coyotes Bear and mountain lions cause problems in the summer Generally Bob works alone Well almost alone He does take his mule and his three dogs along for they all work together It seems a quiet life of solitude camping out all alone during the summer and most of the time in the winter as well When Bob first got to the business he was outfitted with traps and tepee tents Now he says that he has the best possible trailer and good vehicles A trapper must work hand in hand with the Division of Wildlife BLM and the Forest Service Also private land owners must be notified when trapping is going to take place on their property and an agreement must be signed before Bob starts his work Signs are put up wherever he is working thus notifying the public that trapping is being done In the event Bob encounters difficulty airplanes or helicopters are called via radio “There are three airplanes in the state” said Bob “and they have top crews The pilots have to be good” When working in a problem area Bob travels with the airplane or helicopter pilot hunting the predators with shotgun Getting in and out of the difficult situations is the responsibility of the pilot Criticism of his work does not bother Bob Oppenheimer “One night lions killed 102 sheep I’m proud of the job I do If I had it to do over I’d do the same thing” Bob and his wife Nancy have five grown children Involved in trapping as he is he says “I’m gone early in the morning and I’m away a lot One has to have a wife like I do who can put up with anything It would be impossible to do the job w ithout her support The national honor was not the first award Bob has received He was nominated by his supervisor in 1984 for a Utah Department of Agriculture Merit Incentive Award For this he received a $500 award from the Commissioner of Agriculture Of his recent State Supervisor of the recognition ADC Program Gary Larson stated “Bob is most deserving of this award He is an outstanding employee and he has an excellent rapport with livestock people” After retirement what will Bob Oppenheimer do? “I'll retire but won’t quit doing this work” That figures since he is a person who enjoys every day doing what he is doing Proposed bill will tax nonproducing mineral rights Senate Bill Number 88 which was introduced by Dr Winn L Richards states: “An act relating to revenue and taxation providing for the assessment and taxation of nonproducing mineral rights providing for reporting and coland providing an lection procedures effective date” A copy of
