didn’t lose a match but Saturday morning the Rabbits had some tough encounters and lost a few Beginning the final round Delta was ahead by 145 points and both Delta and Uintah had eight wrestlers going for the championship Delta met head to head with Uintah three times in the finals and it was calculated that Delta had to win at least two of the matches to come away victorious This is just what Delta did Jim Cox squeezed out a tough win by beating last year’s 3A state champion 5 to 3 and Ricky Porter beat his Uintah wrestler easily by dominating the entire match and scoring Sean Thomas and Russ Henrie also were tournament champions and both won their final events with pins Delta won the tournament with 2455 points Uintah (last year’s 3A state s championship team) took 2nd with 235 v points Richfield placed 3rd with 1675 points Alta was 4th with 1385 points Union was 5th with 1105 points and Juab was 6th with 935 points followed by Morgan Timpview Wasatch Pineview and North game against Delta was a very exciting game to watch Through most of the first and second quarters Delta maintained a slight edge over the Eagles And late in the second quarter with the help of great defensive play by Noe Yamaguchi and Cindy Taylor the Eagles left the floor with only a one point deficit at half time At the beginning of the third quarter the score was 22 to 21 in Delta’s favor From that point on the lead changed hands many times leaving the Eagles with a 3 point deficit as they entered the fourth quarter Noe Yamaguchi got the fourth quarter off to a good start by sinking a to tie the score at 33 With five minutes left in the game Alisha Wright dropped in a jump shot to make the score Millard-3The Rabbits tied it up with only two and a half minutes left Later in the quarter the Eagles led 43 to 40 but with 8 seconds left Delta made a jump shot and fouled Delta missed the but got the rebound and made the winning shot as time expired This ended the game with a score of Delta 44 Millard 43 Both teams should be congratulated on excellent ball playing Delta wins one loses one It has been described by some as a lineup of trees but to the North Sanpete Hawks it was just plain scary With Rob Fowles at 6 feet 6 inches starting at point guard and the smallest player being a six foot three inch Spud Webb at center Sanpete had to wonder at the sanity of the Delta High coaching staff But it worked and worked well as Delta pulled off a minor upset over the Hawks The score doesn’t tell the whole story The Rabbits led by thirteen at the half but came out cold in the third Jason Bailey hit two key quarter field goals for Sanpete and by the end of the quarter the margin was cut to eight Then in the fourth Sanpete tried a little half court trap but Delta stayed patient forcing the Hawks to foul And this fouling was the key to Delta’s win as the Rabbits hit 24 out of 35 clutch free throws Bret Wardle was a big key at the end hitting nine pressure free throws and had this to say about the game “The first four shots were pretty scary but after that wanted them to foul me” Rob Fowles led the Rabbit attack with nineteen followed by Kevin Bunker and Jon Corey with each Paul Bailey paced the Hawks with 19 in a losing effort Delta's win came off a disappointing loss to Manti on Wednesday The game was close being within two points most of the way until it came to Manti hittheir free end throws the at of the ting game Manti ran their now common slowdown offense which took Delta away from their game plan The Rabbits’ side game was rendered ineffective and free throws they only converted 5 of All of these factors led to the disaploss pointing Matt Johnson led all scorers with nineteen points followed by Brett Wardle with 9 six of these coming off of three pointers Delta faces a very good team this week as they face off against the Beaver Beavers Tuesday The Beavers are in ranked third the state by the Salt Lake Tribune JV starts at 5:30 and the
