both forest and sage chukar partridge Hungarian partridge ptarmigan cottontail rabbit and snowshoe rabbit will open September 12 while the pheasant and quail will open later on October Norm Bowden allowed forage for grouse chukars to scatter due to the abundance of water Although it has been a good year for the chukar population west of hunting may be hard” Pheasant habitat has been steadily declining in recent years and more and are limiting the more landowners number of the hunters allowed on their lands Sportsmen may want to contact landowners early to gain permission to hunt Archery Elk Harvest Range Camp Archery elk hunters harvested 204 bulls and 31 anterless elk statewide last year for a iy success This year the Division of Wildlife is projecting a similar harvest Beginning September 5 and continuing through September 20 all elk areas under Open Aras in listed on the 1987 Big Game Proclamation will be to resident and nonresident archers in possession of a current valid upland game species dove has to be the hardest for most people to enjoy eating Dove meat is dark and flavorful Cook it slowly and with plenty of moisture to counter its tendency to be tough A good recipe for “Roast Dove” is as follows: Place cleaned whole dove or dove breast in baking dish just large enough to accommodate one layer of birds breast side up Sprinkle with salt and pepper and add about Vi teaspoon poultry seasoning for each 12 birds Chop large onion 2 stalks celery and apple Distribute over birds Add ' stick cup water and dot with margarine Bake 30 minutes in 325 degree oven remove and turn breast side down Return to oven for approximately 45 minutes If doves were skinned instead of plucked pan should be covered with foil last 30 minutes to keep it from drying out (Wildlife Chef published by New Mexico Wildlife Federation) -- DWR- A recent survey indicates that sport hunters are more affluent better educated and older than the national average Titled “Hunting Frequency and Participation Study” the survey indicates that the average hunter’s annual household income is $26675 nearly $3000 more than the national average Being better educated evidently results in higher incomes and 49 percent of all hunters polled had attended college in comparison with the national average of 39 percent And nearly one of every four (23 percent) hunters have professionalmanagerial occupations In the category NSSF says hunters are an average of 38 years older than the average American male who is 32 Hunters are dedicated to their sport NSSF reports with the average sportsman (38 years old) having been afield for 23 years Hunters who are more than 50 years old have been involved in the sport for an average of 41 years Young and old enjoy shooting sports and they do so consistently NSSF says About 95 percent of all hunters interviewed had participated in the sport each year since 1982 Deer are the most popular species among hunters and are increasing in popularity faster than any other game Upland small game hunting is the most popular form of the sport (94 percent followed by big game at participation) 85 percent The average sportsman owns 27 rifles and 13 certificates shotguns 24 rimfire rifles About 55 percent of the surveyed hunters own one or more hanof them use handguns and dguns for hunting for one problem The number hunters according to the survey is gaining access to hunting land Of those surveyed 19 percent mentioned access problems Other major problems include crowded hunting areas (18 percent) and finding time to hunt (17 percent) NSSF assessed the survey by saying that "hunting is alive and well in It has long been one of America America’s great sporting traditions and the study revealed that it is continuing inches a day New sand and gravel bars and rock croppings are appearing everyday performance and achievements at the annual Utah Youth Range Camp Coates was among 24 high school students who spent a week of summer vacation at camp learning about Utah’s rangelands and their management The Utah Youth Range Camp is held each July at the historic Great Basin Experiment Station in Ephraim Canyon the birthplace of American range research and management “The camp’s primary objective is to introduce to high school students Utah’s range resources” says Jeff Murphy Utah State University Extension range specialist “About 85 percent of Utah is classified as rangeland and its wise use and management are of vital importance to every citizen” During the camp Coates learned about the importance many uses ecology and management of He also learned how to rangelands identify plants The camp takes a week of hard work for teachers and students but Murphy said that by camp’s end all agreed the reward was worth the effort Coates will attend the Society for next Range Management meeting February in Corpus Christi Texas as a Utah delegate to the youth forum He will present a talk about some aspect of range management and compete for honors among students from other states Canada and Mexico Murphy said Coates’ biggest challenge may come next July when he returns to the Utah Youth Range Camp as a junior counselor for another week of hard yet rewarding work and learning The camp is sponsored by the Utah Section Society for Range Management with support from the USU Extension Service USDA Soil
