Thirty years have passed by and Ward Johnson is retiring “I’ll miss the auction and chewing the fat with the men” he confided “I have met people from all over and I’ve worked with the auction since I was about eighteen years old” Both he and his wife Bonnie admitted that they will miss the association with the people At the state Brand Inspectors’ Meeting held at Spanish Fork Canyon on August 24 Ward was one of the honored guests He was presented a plaque and a buckle in recognition for his years of service As an employee of the Utah Department of Agriculture Ward has been the brand inspector for most of Millard County His responsibilities have cluded inspecting all cattle going out and coming into the area inspecting animals at the time ownership changes and inspecting all animals that go through the auction Ever at his side covering in her husband’s absence and doing all the book work has been Bonnie Johnson The job is more involved than one might imagine As an inspector Ward is bonded “I have a job and I have to do it” he stated in a matter of fact tone Over the years he has become acwith and recognizes the quainted brands and the animals identifying the owners All brands are listed in a large book put out by the state and with it 93 million miles to the sun would take 2123 if years Ward must cross check for exact identification Animals are to be branded within six months following change of owners and the inspector must be ever vigilant for theft As the official keeper of records and books Bonnie has had to prepare detailed monthly reports for the state All figures must add up and a record of every certificate must be kept Audits take place “on the spot” If there are discrepancies the state wants to know why Each Tuesday for thirty years Ward Johnson has been at the Livestock Auction Besides checking brands on cattle he also inspects proof of ownership on horses and ownership on moving sheep Is there anything about the job that Ward has not liked? “I don’t like going to court” he said Otherwise his has very much enjoyed what he has been doing “I just hope I have no enemies” he concluded Bonnie retired from Contel a few years ago and now Ward’s retirement will be official on September 15 What do they plan to do?
