A great deal of paper work is involved in running all facets of the Border Inn for it is located in two counties and in two states (The inn is in Nevada while the motel and gas pumps are in Millard County Utah) Each day Denys devotes two hours just to paper work Her other duties include managthe entire ing operation waitressing cooking pumping gas and occasionally cleaning motel rooms “Running one’s own show is a great confidence builder” the soft spoken woman shared Eleven employees work for Denys and her mother and it is to them that much credit is given “I have really good help and I’m really happy with the people whom I have hired” commented Denys She acknowledged that she is happy with how the business is being run and added that with her more could easily be employees handled During the year that the new Border Inn has been open people from literaland all ly all classes all occupations over the world have been visitors and guests The people are what Denys most enjoys about exercise This means using large muscle groups for a minimum of 15 minutes times per week in a rhythmical fashion such as to elevate the heart rate to a target exercise level Brisk walking running even stair climbing if it is undesirable to be outside can be performed with little to no equipment Secondly one must include flexibility as part of a well rounded exercise program This is probably the one area we personally found to be the weakest in the calesthenic routines previously seen Weak not from the prospective of not included but from the prospective of being unsafe Exercises such as windmills toe touches and full while they provide some squats stretch they are very risky to the back neck and knees We now know their are better ways of accomplishing the same goals but with less risk As with any form of exercise if you are over 35 have two or more cardiac risk factors (heredity smoking high blood pressure elevated triglycerides or overweight) you should see your family of exercise (unless you count aerobic dance!) towards sports specific skills and drills There are many benefits to be gained by a return to this form of exercise both for school age athletes and for adults For the youth calisthenics such as pushups pullups dips and partial situps or crunches offer an excellent means of muscle strengthening without the dangers of weight training By using one’s own the child not only body weight develops strength but also balance and to some extent coordination For the adult these exercises offer a routine of strengthening and toning that can be performed nearly anywhere and with very little “props” This means not needing free weights or Nautilus to perform one’s exercise routine so for the frequent traveler one with little time or money to invest or one with little space calesthenics can provide the strengthening component to a well rounded exercise program It is important to point out two things The first is to achieve a complete exercise program one border sits on the welcoming visitors from all over the world anytime of the day or night The inn had its beginnings some twenty-siyears ago Nino Schena had moved his family from Eureka to Delta determined to try a new way of his ventures was the founof life One year ding of the Border Inn in his oldest child daughter Denys was twelve years of age owned and Nino The years passed operated the inn and Denys grew up The latter graduated from Delta High School earned a degree in history from the University of Utah married had two sons and moved to California with her husband and children In 1977 Nino decided that he wanted to to sell the inn and sell he Denys and her first husband The young couple moved from California to Nevada to take over the business Actually Denys admits that she wasn’t crazy about the idea for she had never worked in a cafe a bar or a However she establishment gambling knew that her husband very much wanted to own his own business so she supported the decision After they all were established in Baker Denys found that she really liked owning and operating the inn Ironically it was Denys who stayed with the Border Inn running it alone for four years after she and her husHe was not as band separated enamored with the business as he had anticipated so he returned to California In 1981 the inn burned down Denys sold what was left after the fire but the new owners did nothing with the place After a couple of years Denys was able to repossess the property Once more she was in business and much had to be done Despite good credit ratings of Denys and her family the business was difficult to finance due to the rural locafrustrated tion Denys although persevered seeing the project to completion Since the fire had destroyed the inn a completely new edifice was designed and erected New gas pumps were also added but the motel remain-ein tack In June of 1986 the new and remodeled Border Inn owned by Denys and her mother Shirley Schena opened for business How has business been? According to Denys it has been very good Within six months a profit was made much to her surprise “I think this is a natural spot for a business to make it” she said somewhat modestly “The cash flow takes care of itself for us If we have Date High Aug 7 Fri 91 8 89 Sat 9 89 Sun Mon 10 92 91 Tue 11 88 Wed 12 85 Thu 13 Low Precp 60 54 24 59 65 67 56 57 tr ALANON: & Wed pm Wed 8 pm Delta Mental Health Offices 51 North Center For info call: PR0BLEMS& Geno: TEENAGE Call the busiest one of the four No vacations can be taken then Shirley Schena works the morning shift enabling Denys to go to town to get away and r hour to avoid working shifts Shirley also manages the business in Denys’ absence Having lived in Baker for ten years Denys says that she finds her greatest pleasure in the people for they are dividuals and diverse There are only one hundred adult voters but they as Denys said “give input and state their I’m proud of the people of opinions Baker” Baker does indeed appear to be a town where people “live and let live” Denys Baker a woman with depth and perception seems to share that philosophy She is aware of self yet she allows others the right to be individuals Along with running a business Denys is a wife and mother Her hus band Dean owns and runs the Baker Ranch with his family Although she hastened to say that she is not part of the ranch operation she often feeds the crew and she has “been on a tractor”! Recovery is Continuing Process Dear MM: It’s fortunate that so many people suffer from so many problems related to substance abuse I’m sure these sug- ) gestions will help Dear John: My husband is an alcoholic I know he doesn’t His drinking is a problem to me but not him I have gone to Alanon meetings occasionally I’ve even seen an alcoholicmarriage counselor About 1 year ago I decided I’d give him 1 year to quit drinking When I told him he said he could quit I filed for by himself He didn’t divorce It’s not what I want I love this man but cannot cope with his drinking Even a couple of beers changes his personality When I told him I filed for divorce I got absolutely no reaction The very next day he went out and got drunk This divorce action is not a threat—it’s for real and I plan to go through with it We have no problems otherwise W'hen he’s sober he’s a good person but get a few drinks in him and he’s a big bully How can he throw 10 years of marriage down the tubes for a drink? He just thinks he’s one of the good ol’ boys out for a few drinks but when he’s out he loses all sense of responsibility ie doesn’t come home misses supper Will this man ever get help and how can I make him understand he needs it? Jane Doe Dear Jane Doe: The fact that your husband doesn’t recognize he has a drinking problem is one of the main symptoms of alcoholism Usually those around the alcoholic recognize this fact long before the alcoholic does And the odds are he will be unable to quit drinking by himself With this in mind the combination of alcoholism treatment and Alcoholics Anonymous meetings are unbeatable Add to that Alanon meetings for yourself The “fact” that your decision to file for divorce made no impact may not be quite accurate Apparently your husband turned to his main problem solving tool to handle it Again this is typical for many alcoholics When they experience uncomfortable feelings they often suppress them to the point that it appears they have no feelings at all You’re the only one who can say when you’ve had enough Many recovering alcoholics praise their wives for sticking with them and attribute their sobriety to them Others never get sober In any event giving your husband a year to quit is a futile gesture He may be dead in a year My advice is to contact a treatment center and discuss an intervention plan Being prepared for the next “crisis” may be the most effective means of getting him into treatment And treatment is the most effective way of beginning sobriety |
