Show workers After John Lyman Peterson Peterson chosen Marshal of the Day John Lyman Peterson was born Feb 2 1898 in Fremont Utah to John Hecter Peterson and Julie Ellen Peterson He was the second child in a family of five brothers and sisters He also had ten half brothers and sisters He moved to Delta with his family in 1906 at 8 years of age His family was one of the first settlers in Delta After unloading their belongings they went out to the Diversion Dam area to work Their homes were tents and John’s mother cooked for the workers at the Dam John made 25 cents a day carrying water to the Millard County the dam was finished the family moved on to the UB Dam When the work was finished the family came back to Delta to plant crops After planting and watering had word that the dam had broken and was gone The family again packed up and went to DMAD to build another dam While the family was there brother Lloyd was born He was the first baby bom in Delta John is the only living person today that worked on the Diversion Dam while it was being built John enlisted in World War I in 1918 He served in Virginia and Washington DC before going overseas to Liverpool England France and Germany There are five good friends left in Delta that served in World War I Harold Morris Charlie Thomas LeGrand Law Doyle Steele and John L Peterson After discharge from Service John met and married Katie Barlocker in 1920 They have been married 67 years They are the parents of 7 sons Leland deceased Arland Pleasant Grove Rodney and Kenneth Salt Lake City Carlyle and Shirley Delta Raymond Calif They have 24 grandchildren and 33 great grandchildren John in his lifetime in Delta helped with the first sewer He recalls that the Ripley Believe of Not Column stated Delta Utah was the only town in the United States with a sewer system and not a water system He helped build the first overpass He worked at the sugar factory He worked with SPA on the roads and was an active help with the church welfare program John has been a farmer and was a mail carrier for Rt and 2 for 22 years in Delta He served under 6 postmasters He was also custodian for the Stake House in Delta for 6 years He is an active member of the LDS Church serving as a High Priest He is an active member of the American Legion Post John stated that he has spent 81 years of his life here in Delta and he loves the area He can’t think of any other place he would like to be and he feels being chosen Marshal of the Day for the Fourth of July is a real honor Fillmore 4th of July events is “Happy Birthday Constitution” the theme for the exciting activities planned for July 3 and 4 in Fillmore This years activities will begin with the Children’s Parade scheduled for 7 pm on July All children 11 years old and younger are encouraged to decorate their bikes or wagons whatever and join in the fun No motorized vehicles will be allowed The parade will begin at Second South and proceed along Main Street to Center Street There will be treats at the park for all children who complete the entire parade route as well as prizes for the best entries July 4 activities will begin at 7 am with the early breakfast ($3 00 per person $200 senior citizens) at the Legion Building 9:30 am the giant parade will begin at Second South and travel north up Main Street to Duane’s Corner then go west for one block and then south to the park Grand Marshals for the parade will be Dallin and Cathryn Nielsen Prizes will be award ed to entires in three categories: comand religious mercial Anyone interested in participating please contact Lyle Evans in the park will begin imEvents mediately following the parade with a bake sale featuring fresh donuts pies and an assortment of other delicious treats Activity booths as well as a variety of food booths to cater to everyone’s tastes will fill the park The traditional variety show will also be held and feature Fillmore’s finest talent The Children’s Races will be held at a new time and place this year Races for children toddler age to 12 years old will be held at the new church ball diamonds at 7:30 pm There will be concession booths during the races A fireworks display will be set off at dusk Plan to attend Fillmore’s celebration for a Fourth of July the whole family will enjoy Great Cowpie Contest set for July The Great Cowpie Contest is set to take place on July 4 at the Millard High School football field at 2 pm The event which has caught a lot of peoples’ curiosity is being sponsored by the MHS Girls Athletics Boosters to help raise funds for the girls sports program The winner of the contest will receive a $200 prize The football field will be divided to 240 squares each square being about 5 yards x 5 yards Each square will be “rented” for a $500 donation to the MHS Girls Athletics Boosters On the day of the contest a cow will be lead onto the football field Although the cow will be attached to a long rope held by a referee the cow will be allowed to and will speak about our Constitutions Bicentennial Birthday At the State Lions Convention in Clark Hardy of Vernal on June the Hinckley Lions Club was put in as a Trustee of the Utah Lions Foundation to serve for a period of three years Since the initial donation of the Lions for the creation of the Dept of at the University of Ophthalmology there has Utah School of Medicine been a close partnership between that department and the Utah Lions The next major step was the creation of the by the Utah Eye Bank sponsored Lions Since its inception it has continuously expanded and improved The Eye Bank with membership in the Eye Bank Association of America since 1971 has been fully accredited since 1983 In January 1986 in order to more accurately reflect current services which include banking of tendon bone and nerve as well as corneas it became the Lions Eye and Tissue Bank Now the Utah Lions are being asked to continue their partnership with the Dept of Ophthalmology with a great new project The University of Utah is embarking on a major effort to build an eye research and clinical care facility that will cost 8 million dollars The Utah Lions are being asked to participate in the raising of funds for what will be Lions as the Utah known Eye which will be Reasearch Laboratory housed in that facility The challenge the sum is raise Lions to the Utah to of $650000 as matching funds to secure a federal grant from the National Eye Institute in that amount to finance this special research laboratory Howard Roundy of the Hinckley Lions Club is a member of the finance committee to raise funds for this important research lab These research laboratories are going to have a significant impact due to the nature of the project It will be comprised of individuals who are trying to understand the mystery of vision with those who will be working on human brain electrode implantation The overall project is to be able to allow people to see who have useless eyes by completely bypassing the eyes This can be done by implanting electrodes into the brain and creating sion by using sophisticated video cameras to record information and pass these electrical impulses to the brain The hallmark of this research will be in determining how the electrodes can be implanted and more importantly pattern the video cameras after normal eyes to allow vision in those who are hopelessly lost This goal is feasible and possible Electrode implantation has been carried out at the University of Utah and recruitment of specialists who have We done this elsewhere is underway have a research
