many Utahns began using stoves and fireplaces as a regular source of winter heat according to Logan City fire department’s battalion chief is a major cause Creosftte If you burn wood regularly in a stove now fireplace or is the time to check for creosote buildup in the chimney “You’ll know right away if you’ve got a creosote fire’’ says Wayne Ringer Utah State University Extension energy specialist “You’ll hear a loud roar m the chimney area and if flames will be you look outside shooting out the top of the chimney like a blow torch" Creosote is the dark brown or black substance that builds up inside the chimney during burning If it gets too thick it can catch on fire During a creosote fire chunks of the substance are blown burning out of the chimney and can land on the roof and start the house on fire Ringer says we in Utah are especially at risk because creosote builds up faster when softwoods are burned Most people in the state burn softwoods such as pine fir or spruce In addition while stoves provide a more efficient source of heat than open fireplaces because they can be shut down so the wood burns slowly this slow fire greatly creases the amount of creosote buildup Ringer says If you use your chimney regularly check it at least twice a year Scraping out the creosote can be messy and difficult so Ringer recommends you call a professional chimney sweep Ringer suggests you also do a general cheek of the fireplace and chimney at this time Make sure the chimney has a tile or metal flue liner look for holes m the mortar and make sure the aiea around a wood
