language by Jillyn Smith Science Writer Utah State University The movie “Children of a Lesser is a sort of God” film But actor William Hurt translates for those of us who are not fortunate enough to understand the enchanting language-silanguage The recorded history of sign language can be traced back to around 530 AD and Italian Benedictine monks who had taken vows of silence The monks created sign language to communicate with each other Their special language was passed down through the centuries and hundreds of years later monks used sign language to teach deaf pupils When the Abbe de L’Epee started his school for the deaf in Paris in 1775 he learned sign language from deaf people modified it to approximate spoken French and used it to teach his students Then Thomas Gallaudet brought de l’Eppe’s French sign language to America in 1816 when he founded his CT school in Hartford About 60 percent of the signs in American Sign Language are of French origin “The war of methods” a controversy over the best way to educate deaf children arose in the 18th century and raged into the 20th Sign language had fallen into disfavor and was accused of promoting clannishness among the deaf and blamed for their poor grasp of English Because deaf children were normal in every other way some reasoned they should be taught to speak Gallaudet College continued to teach sign language but the oral method was used widely in other schools In oralism children had their hands tied or were forced to sit on their hands while they were instructed to speak Today deaf people are generally volved in “total communication” that is they sign fingerspell and speak or mouth words simultaneously Their communication as it should involved all effective methods for transmitting and receiving information One scientist contends that people born deaf will develop signing if they are permitted as a natural language Signing he says has achieved the status in hearing culture of a language comparable with any other and always had that status although sometimes clandestinely among the deaf Samuel F B Morse and his deaf wife developed their own method of communication They tapped code to each others’ hands Health food? Pass the weiners valuable as the plant protein in peanut butter Peanut butter is a good source the vitamin niacin while weiners contribute thiamin riboflavin niacin and iron Weiners have about twice as much sodium as peanut butter Are you keep track of all this? Which food is winning? Mendenhall says there is no clear cut The terms “junk” and winner “health’ food are just in the minds of the people who are trying to promote or degrade a particular type of food People are possessed with the idea of Weiners are to food what the kazoo to music It’s just hard to take a hot dog seriously However parents who consider eating hot dogs only slightly more healthy are than smoking perfectly willing to let their children eat peanut butter by the bucketful But what of the lowly tube steak? Is it really all that bad especially when compared to peanut butter? Dr Von Mendenhall Extension nutrition specialist at Utah State University doesn’t think so He says when you compare weiners to peanut butter on an equal basis of 100 grams of each you can see that just like people each food has its strong and weak points First off Mendenhall says you see that peanut butter has twice as much protein as weiners On the other hand 100 grams of peanut butter also has twice as much fat as an equivalent amount of weiners Consequently the peanut butter has about 265 more calories than do the 100 grams of weiners he says The food scientist says the animal protein in weiners is about twice as is JENNIE ny MABEN Danille Ludwig Jenni Sims Erin Shipley and Jen- Nielson DONNA HAWK Brooke Petersen and Tony Ponce Middle School The first organized lifesaving lakes in the early 1700s living longer staying younger remaining beautiful and avoiding illness simply by eating or avoiding certain foods However- he says there is absolutely no scientific evidence that avoidance of of processed foods or consumption natural foods will prolong or maintain programs for swimmers began on the Swiss FREE MATINEE Saturday February 7 1:30 and 4 PM tickets available ONLY at anything Weiners don’t stick to the roof of your mouth and it is unlikely that vendors will start selling peanut butter sandwiches at football and basketball games The point is all foods have their place mXXyxyxxxxvv$ngxxxxxxxxxxxxxA news comEleanor Dalton principal plimented seventh grade casts for their in excellent performances “Krav Kamp" and “Alladin” Dean Moody drama teacher thankIn the short pla ed participants “Krazy Kamp” the following were among the dramatis personae: Amelia Anderson Brandon Anderson Coiev Baker Stefanie Cody Butler Christensen Jerad Ciarus Tiffany Brett DeGraw Sam Draper Lori Hare Jason Harris Greathouse Donna Hawk Ryan Jackson Darold Jantzen Kari Knight Brittney Land Danielle Ludwig Jennie Maben JenKim Brooke Petersen ny Nielson Peterson Tony Ponce Kathy Redd Hillary Ross Loren Schneider Spencer Jenni Sims Scoville Erin Shipley Jeana Skeem Ryan Tippetts Among the leading characters m “Alladin” were: Angie Allred Aaron Black Ricki Lynn Bradford Karalee Ekins Dan English Jenny Henrie Hill Matt Hvde Hank Jennileah Nielson Chris Pace Mari Jo Sharlan Taylor “Krazy Kamp” was a play centered around the comic misadventures arising in both a boys’ and a girls' sumwas the tradimer camp “Alladin” tional story of a lad who found a magic lamp and a genie of PLAZA TWIN THEATRE 520 E Blvd Topaz aj !
