Show iiunlt Millard Business of the Week Individuals Important to S & S Owners years ago Their connection with the town however goes back to 1949 When Neno’s father died his to mother needed something to occupy her time so the family including Neno bought a farm in fact the were in Abraham They first ones to bring power to Abraham! In 1961 Shirley and Neno felt that they needed a change of pace and a change of scenery They moved to Abraham and determined to try farming The homestead included two hundred and forty acres and one hundred cows Needless to say their new life was a challenge Although the Schenas enjoyed the farm Neno soon realized that his new vocation was not as profitable as he had hoped it would be He needed to supplement his income Therefore for the next seventeen years Neno and his brother commuted to Eureka where they worked as hard rock miners They worked three shifts drove AND took care of the farm Shirley too kept very busy for she helped run the farm tended the needs of her seven children and worked at the hospital as a therapeutic recreational therapist Looking back she wonders “How did we ever do it?” When Neno retired he felt that he needed something to do He began a distributing business selling such items as tools and cutlery to farmers around the county He and Shirley had owned by Dawn Carder December 27 1986 was Saturday the last day at S & S Distributors for Neno and Shirley Schena They are moving on to newer ventures but it was with some sadness that they relinquished ownership As Neno said “Our customers weren’t people They were dads moms grandparents and kids” The Schenas will continue to be affiliated but they have turned the business over to their daughter Nina Paula Higgs and Nina’s Higgs Both old and new customers are assured that the store open Fridays Saturdays and Sundays from 9 am to will offer the same low 5:30 pm prices quality and variety as it has in the past S & S stands for Schena and Schena and the business is housed in a small twenty-si- unpretentious looking building just west of the overpass on highways 6 and 50 in Delta (The little building is betand one hundred ween years of age) There one can find just about anything he can name such as brass various glass gift items ceramics clothes tools and cutlery As Shirley said “If you dig deep enough you can find it!” With much of the in merchandise displayed outdoors front of the store one may be surpis-eat the quality and variety offered both natives The Schenas of moved to the Delta area Eureka yfi i'lTl T IT i l i 1 1 Quality 705 LUMBER Delta Main “service" DRUG ORWE Eat In All of types Chicken 303 00 00 Shared Ministry 107 So 200 W In Utah Pastor Warren Fikeis Sunday Worship School Sunday INN DISCOUNT p m p m 00 10 is 540 our p m p m a m Blvd 10 $$ Sac out Bp 411 00 Meeting Bishop Kent a m New W Hwy 6 GMC 50 Farm Equip Trucks ACHIEVEMENTS a m am 857 2338 res WARD 846 Res Res 30 p m 50 p m 40 p m 846 2261 30 a m 50 p m 40 p m Res 2 Res DELTA 6th Bishop 00 p m 20 p m 4 10pm 864 4102 Bishop Dutson 00 am a m 50 p m 864 3757 Res Sac 9 Meeting Prim YW Joseph Young Res 00 a m 0 20 p m II 10 pm 864 4829 Bp Meeting Arthur Jeffery 9 Sac Meeting Cecil Losee Bishop A 00 a 10 10 a 10 50 a m Res 864 3326 00 am 1150am p m Res 864 2505 mrrrrrrrrrrTrrrrrrrri?rrrrrTrTrrrTrTrrmrrTr 864 3615 Res Allred OASIS WARD PH YW 9 Prim Sac Meeting Conrad Slanworth 9 Meeting Manley Abbott Res 864 am p m 00 p m Res 864 3494 Prim Meeting Bishop Howard Waller Clayton WARD Carling Res Mams Res Western p m 20 p m 05 p m 864 3294 9 00 00 a m 00 00 a m a m 10 50 m Sac Res 126 : Complete hair care for the entire family blocks So of Husky Delta Ph 2 Vi Vit Hardware Quality oiir hjrilMjru hoiisi jru ilolhing inis lu‘j(hiurHTs 00 a m 00 am 10 50 a m Res 759 2481 Sac Meeting Bp Vernon J Christensen HOLDEN WARD YW Prim PM 266 00 a m 00 am WEDDING 40 City Bldg Service Worship Bible Study Information 00 00 10 call 743 5864 or 864 HOLY FAMILY CATHOLIC Mam St Fillmore 390 Sunday Mass Father Walter Delta Rectory phone a m a m 674 00 a m Pastor Reindeau m 864 37I0 phone for info 743 6I81 10 Worship II 6 Evening Worship Wed Pastor Ed Williams Pastor 00 00 00 00 Delta Bible Study Asian Kenneth p m 743 6360 Reg Kuhlman m S Hwy 99 a For all your glass needs The “We Care" glass shop 204 West Main - Well Neno plans to try to acquire more stores in which to place merchandise He’ll continue to buy and to supply for another store in Fillmore as well Shirley will be devoting her time to The Border Inn in Baker Nevada which she jointly owns with daughter Denise If it weren’t for the new involvements the Schenas would be feeling a greater sadness at giving up conS & S They both will of course tinue to be in touch with their “family” of customers 98 |
