What an awesome thought! Yet this was the dream-tmotivating force that propelled the young man With the optimism of youth he tackled the project determined to succeed Little did fourSteve Riding realize it but teen his career was launched For the next two years Steve labored with tenacity Three cars were torn apart stripped and combined to make the finished product Surely it had been a labor of love and the best learning perience of Steve’s life The 1959 Chevy became his trademark recognized all over Delta After high school Steve spent one year working in Ncphi in his brother's body shop The next step on the career ladder was the two year program of study in the automotive department at Utah Technical School in Provo Then Steve returned home to to work seriously in the car business For the next thirteen years Steve worked for his father and the Ford dealership at Riding Ford His duties and responsibilities there were manager repairman parts man part time secretary and part time salesman Working with Steve and his father were Steve’s unde and his brother making Riding Ford truly a family affair The plan had been to continue the Ford dealership When that didn’t materialize Steve began to consider other career avenues There was a vacant shop on Main Street He was offered a good position in St George What did he want most to do? The people in Delta were the determining factor in the decision Steve ed their warmth and friendliness and he wanted to remain with them Also a shop on Main Street was empty just The opporwaiting for an occupant and the timing tunity the conditions seemd to fit together like the pieces of a puzzle Spity’s Uptown Auto Repair became the plan The move was a big step for Steve experienced though he was As a matter of fact his own decision really frightened him The necessary and welcomed "shot in the arm” came when Dick Ross joined Steve becoming second in command On February 12 1986 they moved into the building behind Big A On March 1st the doors were opened for business The shop has never wanted for customers Because Steve and Dick had their own followings Spity's was imThe mediately a busy establishment steady flow of customers prohibited Steve from doing all the planned but he was uncomplaining He greatly appreciated the work and the community’s support Spity's Uptown Auto Repair does provide extensive service It is open Monday through Friday from 8 am until 5 pm and a half day on Saturhour towing windday shield glasswork and new tires are available as well as major mechanical work One can get anything done on his or her car from a lube job to an engine overhaul Steve attributes much of his business success to his staff With Dick Ross as his assistant manager Steve never hesitates to go nor worries when he has to be away Dennis Dutson and Scott Ross complete the picture doing anything and everything that is Much of Sieve’s quired technically time is spent in the office With a small staff limited space and demanding work openness and congeniality are essential Steve feels fortunate to enjoy both with his fellow workers The tight economy has not adverseIn fact it ly affected Steve’s business probably has been beneficial for people are holding onto their old cars rather than buying new ones Older cars require service work Perhaps car owners are forced into having work done a little at a time due to limited funds but they do go to Spity’s And they return Word of mouth seems to be the best recommendation which brings customers Quality and guaranteed Steve is work makes them return aware of the stigma that surrounds automobile repair shops— the stigma of distrust To counter it he maintains a positive altitude He tries to treat his STEVE RIDING Dennis Dutson Scott customers as he would like to he treated— fairly and honestly He has only been “stuck" two or three times which he considers a pretty good record The next year may he a dilfieult one economically for business Many construction workers have gone and others This may create a are leaving However theic are many "squeeze" cars in to go to continue the healthy competition that presently exists “Yes like having my own business It's a good feeling to hear someone say ‘Talk to the boss’ "Steve admits "But being the boss isn't always all that it’s cracked up to be The expression ‘the buck stops here’ definitely applies" There is one stereotype of auto mechanics that personally bugs Steve People often picture mechanics as with grease from head to toe It is important to Steve that his friends and customers see him all cleaned up attending and participating in activities that are totally unrelated to his woik About the only dislike (and it is a minor one) that Steve has of Della is winter weather Otherwise he enjoys living and working here The town is quiet the people are warm and friendof IPP has been a ly The addition definite improvement The new people Ross and Dick Ross have livened up the aiea and the natives changing the way of life a tle and for the best Many of the new people have become Steve's pctsonil liiends as well as his customers ile is full and busy for Sieve Riding Along with running his own business he is involved with his wile eight childicn and one grandchild His busy schedule leaves little time loi him to pm sue such interests as waiei skiHe does ing boating and fishing manage to find time to compete in diag races usually in St George Dick Since both Steve and aie lacing enthusiasts it is not surprising that the business sponsors diag
