children All in all Ida has mothered thirteen children Ida has seived in a number of church including Junior Sunday positions School and Primary teacher Primary Baker Drug remains Fillmore mainstay They came back to illmore to eatry on a tradition and aftet two yeais Ron and Donna’s Baker Drugs have become a mainstay on Main Street However marking two year’s in business for Baker Drug is somewhat misleading since Ron’s parents Chester and Evelyn Baker owned and operated the business at the same location for 37 years Ron and Donna had been away from Fillmore for over years when they opted for the chance in 1984 to return and take over the family business After an ambitious remodeling project the drug store at 40 North Main more than doubled in size and now encompasses an area of 3500 sq ft Another change that significant came to the business after Ron and Donna took over was the switch from Rexall to the Good Neighbor Pharmacy franchise They also expanded the store’s line of cosmetics which cludes Revlon in addition to obtaining a new line of greeting cards Most recently Ron and Donna both have photographers professional opened an extensive photography service with a complete studio operation and a "Kis” photo developing lab “We opened the photo services end of the business for two reasons" Ron explains "First there was a need for complete studio services on the east side of the county and second it allowed us to diversify which in this economy is important to any business” serThe Baker’s in and vices include passports weddings dances and prom school yearbooks pictures in addition to old photo copying Needless to say adding this scvice has kept the couple busy with after hours photo sessions throughout the area The "Kis" photo services allows Ron and Donna to offer the east county rush developing of color prints in one to two hours next day service for color prints and 3 or 5 day service for color prints They also handle black and and and white color slides enlargements of color prints in the 8x10 5x7 and 4x6 formats If this were not enough to keep the business couple hopping they have also continued to expand the regular drug store’s sevices with video tape and machine rentals and wedding supplies and invitations t Making the business grow is and the Baker’s pride themselves on the variety of services they oiler But more importantly they want to be known for the personalized service they can give "For us the thing we feel we can really offer the community is our willingness to really serve them" Donna said "We can respond in emergencies when we aren’t open even delivering if necessary When you know youi customers personally you just give a tle moie Ii is something you don’t find in the big chain operations" But while the Bakei’s continue to on the traditions of the carry hometown business they have to compete in the modern world of aggressive sales piomonon "We have a much larger overhead with the larger store" Ron said "So we have to push volume We have lo stay aggressive on our sales” That is one reason why the Baker Ding has gone to the Good Neighbor Phaimaey line which they have shown can oiler quality "generic" brands of many products at smaller cost than big name biands In addtion Baker Drug has on a tegular basis a senesol citculai sales on items of good quality ai a competitive puce To keep up with then expanding business el tons Ron and Donna tely on a small but devoted stnlf most ol whom have been with them since opening wo yeais ago Jetty Warner is the lulltime pharmacist with company's Ron’s taihei Chester filling in as and Mary Kay pharmacist or King as pharmacist Sweeting assistant Head Cleik Wanna leeples keeps things in order on the floor with the aid of lulltime clerk Trudy Bond Keiyl I abrum is parttime cleik Also Donna's mother Beulah Payne does a lot of behind the scenes woik with the bookkeeping Donna said it has taken a lot of tra hours and hard work to get the business going since taking over in the 1984 but she doesn’t icgret the move 13 The couple spent yeais in Ilagstalf Arizona vvlieie Ron taught Education Industrial at Northern Arizona University He had pievious-ltaken a Masters Degree in Industrial Ld and Manufactut mg ng at Utah Stale Univeisity During their stay in lagstalf Donna took a BS degree m Industiial on with an emphasis Supervision Photogiaphy and Graphic Arts What does the lu'nic hold loi a illmore business like Baker Drug? Ron and Donna have mixed reactions "We have felt the downturn of the economy from the IPP slowdown just like Delta has" Ron said "And in addtion other actors like the ledetal dairy herd sellout has slowed down the trucking business and all'ected our sales So the larger economy has put us in somewhat of a slump "On the other hand the community has really supported us and we feel that they know we came back to I illmore because we wanted to and we aie heie to stay So we are committed to the out business and the community and we are happy with what we ate doing That altei all is what is impoitunt" 93rd Birthday President and a visiting teacher loi many years On December 13 1979 Ida's husband died Since then she has lived alone and cared for herself A very talented person Ida has mads all kinds of crafts over the years She taught herself how to knit and to she crochet Now at age is almost totally blind and deaf But she still crochets a good part ol cadi day She gives these articles to her neighbors family and whomever comes to visit her She said this is her way of spreading sunshine Ida continues to eniov baking She bakes pies cakes cookies cinnamon rolls and big batches ot biead She delights in giving bem to lamilv and neighbors Ida's lamilv and IneiiJs iccogme that her gieatc’st talent is her gieat capacity to love evetvone She also has a cheeilul pleasant disposition She is an inspiration to us all To know Ida is to love her Her lamilv and tuends wish Ida many mote happv healthy hnthdays 84624 (timmixxlnner The Delta Office of Driver Licenses will be closed Monday-Septemb- 29th for District Meeting in Richfield Normal days in Delta are Mondays and Fridays from 8 am until 5 pm at Bunker Office Plaza Ida Morris Bunker I |
