ARE DANGEROUS — fv EDITOR The “D Stevens & Company” sign will be coming down Men are working in the old “D Stevens & Company” store to make it ready for a new department store It has been there a lifetime for most of us It just serves to remind us ol shopping at D Stevens and Company or "Stevens” as it was called by the townsfolk It was more than just shopping at a department store It was a social occasion Something like going to visit relatives on a Sunday afternoon or going next door to borrow a cup of sugar You had that friendly feeling when you walked through their doors If you leaned to the right aisle Carl Warner or Wallace Church would have the size Ievis you asked for plus a smiling "When did you scrape your nose? Who ar these for? He would need a size 33 been putting on a little weight So you fell out of your treehouse?” If you turned to the left aisle Stella Hawley or Louise Bogh would measure off the latest material along with a "How ya doin girl?” D Stevens pretty well had anything a person could need those days and if they happened to be out you could walk right across the street to Clay Stapley’s “Delmart” If Stevens didn’t have what you needed you never felt your trip was time wasted since you always had enought of a friendly visit to make it worthwhile Mr William (Bill) Starley the owner with his kind and dignified way was always in the store overseeing and visiting with the shoppers “How are you young lady?” He always gave you a feeling of assurance that your were appreciated as a customer and welcomed as a friend Then there was Reed Wood’s comnever had to plete shoe department go to Provo for a pair of shoes until High School graduation then because wanted some pink and white and blue plaid high heels Reed didn’t have too much in plaids that year Most of the time you could walk out with a sturdy pair of shoes and a prize tucked in the box and a friendly visit Ralph Creed had a great grocery red headed department friendly Ralph accomodating and helpful anxious to help us fill our grocery needs Mr Searle was my favorite in his white butcher apron and the snow white hair cutting up a side of beef or pork It was an art the way he arranged the uniform cuts of meat in the metal trays outlined with fresh parsley You could tell him the cut you wanted and he would cut it off the side of beef or paddle off just enough hamburger to make two pounds then quickly wrap all the it neatly in white waxed paper while you would answer questions about your Grandpa or school events or something that lasted longer than getting your meat wrapped am glad to have childhood memories of "D Stevens and Company” especially the "Company” by Lorene B Smith Open letter to Mr Perkes REMEMBER KIPS S0ME FIREWORKS ARE A SOME NUISANCE TO THE iVn I it a jEIfeodfes— I attended the City Council meeting on June 18 1985 to address my problem and the broad boundIn short aries of Chapter 10 order I realized that I was viewed with contempt for thinking that our city officials had made a mistake in their wording of this ordinance was informed that a group of persons brought about that ordinance and that such other ordinances as implied by could be enacted ordinances which would yourself restrain the residents But I could not find out what it would take to rectify those ordinances that take away our basic rights as residents There are three basic people in most communities that bring about unfair ordinances: (1) Minority groups (2) Special Interest groups (3) Complacent citizens A part of a Minority Groups: population differing from others as a whole Special Interest Groups: A group of individuals with one interest-- a benefit to themselves as a industries by clubs education bodies religious groups and with intent unto persons themselves Complacent Citizens: Disposition to please or oblige to tending consent toothers These three of groups types usually bring about government mood and ut that is not the majority Their form of government usually restricts the majority through overordinances and regulaspending tions to get gain for themselves Now Mr Perkes I want to bring to your attention what I have asked from the City (of Fillmore) (1) I want a prepared outline of amend and procedure to change create ordinances want a prepared outline of (2) procedure to remove our Administraof City government tor-type to place our Mayor as a servant for wages to compensate that office and duty (3) I’ve asked to get the City Council meeting (agenda) published before their meeting meets (4) Minutes in the paper immediately after the meeting instead of two to three weeks behind the meeting This would better inform our residents of the intent of the City and other special interest groups This would allow the residents the opportunity to “yes” or “no” the intended policies We also have a policy that has in developed in our our City That is to allow persons unknown to complain against others in private to bring about action This kind of against its residents policy creates an indignant type of government policy that jeopardizes its residents Using secret methods to prosecute its residents is the next to a socialistic form of thing which is not what we government need You yourself Mr Perkes have contributed to that method in your letters or your complaint notice in our local papers To me that does only injustice-n- ot justice Llnwood Tracy Jr WBUTHB f Delta Area B Reed Anonymous To help you coolthe sultry' heat of summer we‘ve put together
