story of (he poppy The beautiful red poppy was chosen the memorial symbol of the war dead I American the by egion and Auxiliary in 1920 It has since become the sign that the high ideals of these brave young men are still loved and honored The poppy is pinned on lapels when respect is paid to the American dead of the two world wars and the Korean and Vietnam wars It seems that toward the end of a fierce battle took place World War on a field in Trance called “I landers Field" Many young men died in that battle and it was late in the day so the decision was made to leave them and come back the next morning to bury them As the soldiers arrived the next morning a beautiful sight greeted them Flanders Held was literally covered with thousands of bright red poppies which had sprung up over night It was as if the precious blood of those young men had seeped into the ground and come up in the form of a red poppy as a tribute and memorial to their death In memory of that day an unknown poet penned these words: Rest in peace ye Flanders’ dead The fight that ye so bravely led We’ve taken up and we will keep 1 rue faith of you who lie asleep With each a cross to mark his bed Where once his own life blood ran red So let your pece be sweet and deep In I landers Though the Sevier Lake (above) is dose to the size of Utah Lake (below) officials doubt it is larger Exat t verification of the Utah Supreme Court A lawsuit challenging a deceased Millard County resident’s right to give Cove Fort and the bulk of her estate to charity was settled in favor of her children Friday The case centered around the estate of Alice Kesler Fillmore who was 88 when she died in 1980 Her estate consisted of numerous pieces of real estate in the county area cluding the Old Cove Fort a travelers’ way station during the pioneer settlement years and more recently a privately managed tourist attraction Mrs Kesler’s five children named to receive shares of her estate in a will were almost disinherited in a 1979 will that came after Mrs Kesler her health in a severe and mental condition decline came to mistrust each child in turn Tour of the children challenged the will on grounds that their mother had delusions that they were suffered cheating her out of her property money and posessions In fact the decision recited audits had been conducted that proved her finances and property had been appropriately handled all the while But Mrs Kesler refused to believe the ev idence and stubbornly continued to insist her children had stolen from her Her contested will left 25 percent of the estate to the Missionary Fund of the LDS Church (to support missions undertaken by young Welsh church members outside of Wales) 15 percent to Primary Children’s Medical Center in Salt Lake City 10 percent to the Utah Chapter of the American Cancer Society 10 percent to the University of Utah Medical Center for staphlococcus infection research 5 percent to the DS Church’s Temple building fund 5 percent to her five children 20 percent to her grandchildren and 10 percent to her greatgrandchildren lower Appealing the unfavorable court decision was First Interstate Bank serving as special firemen hampered a as firefighters front Delta and Hinckley were hampered by a detour around the Sutherland Bridge and a lack of water to fight the blaze The home of Ted and Faye Clark in near Woodrow Hall apSutherland parently caught fire at 10:00 am on May 16 after a clothes dryer was left running in a back room Investigators were not able to determine exactly how the dryer caused the fire No one was at home when the fire started Delta Fire Chief Bryce Ashby said the fire might have been extinguished if the four pumper trucks had not had the unfinished to detour around Sutherland Bridge “Our response time minutes but it was 4 or 5 was only minutes longer than it normally would have been and that could have made the difference” he said Despite the delay in arriving the firemen began to bring the smoldering blaze under control only to be frustrated in their efforts when after 2000 gallons from five trucks were hausted there was no secondary water in the rural agricultural available neighborhood Fire completely destroyed Sutherland home Thursday Because irrigation ditches close to the home were nearly dry firemen drove a mile to get extra water "It seemed that we just about had the fire under control when we had to stop and drive up the road for more water” Chief Ashby said “By the time we had enough water again the flames were coming through the roof” The firemen hauled another 10000 gallons to the scene to no avail the chief said Mrs Clark said that she had left Thursday morning to visit a neighbor Upon returning some 45 minutes later she found the house filled with smoke “We couldn’t get in the front door so we went around to the back but the smoke was too bad there also We couldn’t get in to get anything out” she said Mrs Clark said that she lost a collection of antique furniture and that a few guns were all that was recovered The Delta Fire Department responded with four trucks and 13 men while Hinckley Fire Department assisted with one truck and six men
