IS IT Within the medical profession there are both proponents and detractors ol The controversy exists the use of annual or periodic physical examinations because there is no firm scientifically derived evidence that routine exants decrease disease incidence or mortality and thus are not cost effective However every physician can recall at least one patient whose cancer or heart disease was discovered at an early curable stage as a result of routine health screening Although the data are not complete at least one study did suggest a decreased mortality from hypertension (high blood pressure) and cancer of the colon The Kaiser Perntanente (a health maintenance organization) company studied 5000 men tor 11 years and found that those had tewer problems with who received regular physical examinations and back conditions coronary heart disease hypertension complications colorectal cancers Many other groups and institutions have addressed this issue In general all advocate a series of procedures to ascertain the risk of developing disease and to detect certain diseases especially cancers in their early treatable consisting of history and physical exam certain stages These procedures blood tests and specific diagnostic procedures are scheduled at specific times in one’s life corresponding to the time when the greatest risk tor the disease exists For example the risk ol breast cancer in women is greatest starting during the sixth decade thus mammography is recommended yearly starting at age 50 for routine The following table is a compendium of the recommendations health examination by The American Cancer Society The Mayo Clinic Division of Preventive Medicine and the Canadian Task Force on Periodic These guidelines pertain only to the asymptomatic Health Examination person with no known disease Obviously these tests or others may be required more frequently lor the patient with an identified disease ii' SXIli tb I' m Hi fV Saturday Feb 17 1985 A brother Robert Briggs and his wife Alyce joined the group for the festivities of luncheon and a reception in the Lakeshore LDS Chapel in Tempe The reception carried the car and theme -
