"When we go to the legislature and make our request, our half of the Human Performance Building will already be paid for," Gibb said. "We're DS1J administrators will be asking for $25 million from the Utah Legislature to help fund the Human Performance Building during the next legislative session in spring 2017. The other half of the funds is coming from student fees and donations. Fifteen percent of every student's fees this year is going toward funding the Human prepared." Gibb said DSU needs the Performance Building. see PLAN page 3 lecture series to advocate entrepreneurship BY MARKEE HECKENLIABLE markeekaeDSN Jess Human Performance Human Performance Building because of the lack of recreational facilities at DSU and in the community. Christian Hildebrant, director of campus recreation, said the Human Performance Building will "greatly enhance" DSU because the current recreation facilities are too small and insufficient. "One court in the Student Activities Center is not enough for all our intramurals and sports that use it," Hildebrant said. "In order to meet the need of all our students, we've needed to get creative. The DSU previously requested $40 million to help fund the Human Performance Building, but this request was declined by lawmakers during the most recent legislative session in February. Gibb said he now classrooms and a student wellness clinic. Jonathan Gibb, director of facilities planning, said the goal is to start construction for the A new lecture series is surfacing at Dixie State University, and the speakers are aiming to promote entrepreneurship. The lecture series will consist of entrepreneurs from all over the nation, including an upcoming lecture on Sept. 12 with the makers of Squatty Potty. The lecture series is also a class, giving credit to those who attend Mondays at noon in the Dunford Auditorium in the Browning Resource Learning Center. "We'll have a special speaker who has started a small business or started a business and is running it," said Entrepreneur in Residence Don Watkins. "They come in and tell their story. It's just inspiring for the students." The lecture series isn't just for people who want to be entrepreneurs, Watkins said. "We know a lot of students may not own their own busi ness, but what we teach is how to be an intrepreneur," Watkins said. "Now, intrepreneur means how someone can rise to the top in a business and maybe end up with some ownership." Being an intrepreneur is learning how to "shine" within your own job, even if you aren't the owner of it, Watkins said. Watkins said he's been involved in entrepreneurship since 1983. "I loaded my family up in a motor home and went out selling computer accessories at computer stores to start my business," Watkins said. The lectures are designed to teach students basic principles of the differences between "dreamers and business builders," Watkins said. Chris Brown, visiting instructor of entrepreneurship and instructor for the lecture series course, said he teaches entrepreneurship and also has his own business where he manages dental practices. "We're trying to prepare students as if they were going to go present on Shark 11 t .vs )1k I 1(1-- 1 11111111(11111 77, II Li i r tiiU imoip 'k) ', t s101' tti-V4,.- qtaoffiket;t.,--i- iinipre 111,01141):''.44', 1.1,0:10Ei'l-,-)- .i rtit ilt1; 0,410 h ti,Mlitt ki4C,;(,;11.):41),--fili- . l, ,.',1,..11,11(.--4.-ji.41-011- t C a - -a- - .s.. r Tank," Brown said. Garett Garcia, a senior business major from St. George, said he learned to value entrepreneurship from his dad, who owns his own cabinet making business. He said because of his love for entrepreneurship, him and his brother were able to win the Dixie Opportunity Quest competition in 2015 for their business idea to create a small necktie business. "I love the opportunity to hear the background sto ries of these hardworking entrepreneurs," Garcia said. "I feel like the lecture series gives students a better perspective of what they can become and what they can start working toward, even during college." |
