For this tournament Im going to focus on my team more than who we are up against. And that might be just what the Red Storm volleyball team needs. The team has been working hard, and it has goals its ready to accomplish. Pratt said: Hopefully well finish top in the conference. I have pretty high expectations as a whole. If we put it together and are mentally tough I think we have a chance. So far the team has been turning out the way Pratt was hoping for. It has had some good practices and some bad practices, but they're working out the . After a hard week of y practices capped by two games in as many days, the Red Storm fell victim to the dreaded injury bug. While none of the injuries are of a serious nature, it still creates challenges for a team already dealing with roster issues. Middle blocker Ashton Gray, a junior integrated studies major from Alpine, said she has had a good time playing for Pratt. I like her a lot, Gray said. She pushes us to be our best, and she's really good at coaching. Outside hitter Kristin Heywood, a sophomore general education major from Portland Ore., said Pratt is tough, but she knows what she's talking about. She said she also provides the discipline the team needs. We've been working really hard, and it's only going to get better from here, Heywood said. The Red Storm do not think twice about starting the season away. I think it'll be fine, I thing. Fox loved the small class sizes, and the closeness of the DSC campus as a whole intrigued her. Fox wears a necklace with No. 15 on it. This was her jersey number in high school. Long break heals players BY SHELBY MISRASI Volleyball preseason is about to begin, and the Dixie State College Volleyball team has been preparing to do its best. The team plays its first game in a tournament in Pomona, Calif, on Friday. It has two games on Friday, playing Simon Fraser University and California State Polytechnic University. Dixie also has two games on Saturday against San Francisco State University and Anderson Uni- Hud- dleston said. Shes a really good athlete, so thats helped her a lot. And shes worked hard during rehab. Shes not quite herself because shes an amazing player, so shes not quite there. But Im impressed with her progress. Mentally, that was the hardest Pratt said. I'm just anxious to play; I just want to play. I'm anxious to play an opponent, not ourselves. Gray said she thinks the team will do really well in the upcoming tournament. She said the team has been practicing hard, and they just need to apply what they've learned in their practices into their games. DSC has been working hard in practice and getting ready for the season. The team works on skill as a whole and also individual talent. Pratt said it's good to know how everyone plays because in a game all of the pieces are there with individual skill. Pratt is expecting greatness from her team, and the members have been working hard. I'm excited and anxious to get started, Pratt said. "We had a few more people that didn't show up than we thought were going to and a few others dropped out relatively early," he said. Not only does the break allow injured players time to heal, but it also provides opportunity for the team to build chemistry and make im two-wee- J 1 provements before the regular season begins. "The break gave us another week to where we could really work on some fitness things and make sure we're good that way," Ortiz said. "Then next week again we start dialing in to get ready for the games coming next weekend.1' The Red Storm travel to Phoenix to begin the regular season with matches against Cal Poly Pomona on Friday and Colorado State University-Puebl- on o Sunday. Both opponents are new to DSC, something that makes compreparation more plex.
