The NCAA tournament is already so exciting and what wrong would it do to expand it and make it last longer? More basketball games equal more entertainment. Think about filling out a bracket with 96 teams. What is wrong about giving the little guys a shot at the big dance? It would be any senior's dream to play a game in the tournament. Make a little money. Watch more games. I don't see whats wrong with that. Whatever happened to good, honesty and integrity? The practice of end the wardrobing is basically stealing from the retailer. Anyone who tries to justify it by saying, 'The retailer knew what I was doing, or 'The retailer will never know,' is lying. Clothes are for sale for a reason. It is not like checking a book out of a library. If you cant afford to buy something, dont buy it, period. Learning to do without is part of growing up and taking responsibility. If this is how you are going to live your life now, and justify this small indiscretion, what are you going to justify tomorrow? Integrity is being honest and having a high moral principle even when no one is watching. Apparently, the students who practice wardrobing forgot what honesty is. I hope the next time someone considers doing this they look beyond the high school mentality of having to dress like everyone else and instead act like an adult and only buy what they can afford. Crystal Schwalger, sophomore general education major from Washington -- Learning In response to Mark Green's article titled "Students responsible for their own learning," exactly what is Mark's argument? With his tendency to hop from one argument to the next, I find he contradicts himself. Therefore, it's hard to agree or argue with him. If I ignore his irrelevant comments about biased text books," what I believe Mark is arguing is students are the only ones responsible for their learning. He claims students have an equal if not greater responsibility to learn as their teachers do to EMPIRE ids on continued from page is YlfflERHASSJX MCMNQIARTS. cian ALU&AIDRS 6RCW DUAL EXHAUSTS. ting in, fied.lt to be only who sand ere of dis- LAWRENCE cf ARABIA IfWENTED ELEOPlCnY. ease THE RECESSION IS CVER. rveall Q 6 need to spend some money on our military, but I believe we could be a lot safer for a lot cheaper. The financial cost of our super power interventionist policy is absurdly high, and when you consider the priceless losses of human life involved the cost is even higher. If I believed our military was making us safer or truly making a significant difference in the world, I would feel better about these sacrifices. teach them. I agree with this. However, Mark completely contradicts himself when he says, If a student doesnt want to learn, a good teacher or book will be irrelevant and vice versa. I've seen many cases where stubborn students open up and want to listen to what an interesting teacher has to say, and for that matter, if a student who wants to learn is in a class with a poor teacher, how are they supposed to be taught? I dont believe children are the only ones responsible for their learning. Parents and teachers have a great influence in the learning process. Saying students are in it alone is absolutely incorrect. If that were the case, students wouldnt need to go to school. Lacey Knighton, freshman radiography major from Cedar City -- However, I feel like our military interventions do neither. According to Rep. Ron Paul on War, Peace, and the News Media by Michael Shank published by Lew Rockwell.com on March 24, 2007, Ron Paul, Texas Congressman and 2008 presidential candidate, said our military interventions over the last 50 years or more have made this country less safe. Once we start to intervene it comes back to haunt us, he said. Osama bin Laden was an ally and now hes our enemy. Saddam No legal weed Richard Bracken has brought forth a very controversial topic. He has brought forth his ideas formally, but his argument is fairly weak. The author states that marijuana being more harmful than alcohol or cigarettes have no basis in fact. This is a double-edge- d sword because he is making an appeal to the masses by saying that everyone knows that alcohol or cigarettes are worse than marijuana, when it actually depends upon the person on whether or not it is more deadly. The author hasnt covered all the arguments against legalizing marijuana. For example, when he is talking about the medical problems that happen from cigarettes, he doesnt give ground by saying that using marijuana will rapidly increase your heart rate, and within see LETTFRS page 8 Hussein was an ally, now hes our enemy. We cannot afford to fund our current scale of military intervention. We cannot allow more people to die for unjust causes. We cannot continue to use a broken strategy that drains our pockets, kills our loved ones and makes the world a more violent and dangerous place for everyone, including Americans. America does not need to become an isolationist nation, but it does need to stop attempting to control the world and everyone in it via military force. Obama Worked tirelessly to eaRh reform a health care system that currently passes over people who are in need of care but arent fortunate enough to afford ridiculously overpriced insurance. Under Obamas plan, this nation is one step closer to having health care that is available to all, not just the privileged. However, every Republican representative opposed that cause. Their reasoning for such strong opposition? Itll cost too much money, a capitalistic idea that brings me to another policy held by the administration. Businesses should have the opportunity to grow, but not without boundaries. Obama has never preached a desire for a flagrant halt to all private business; he has merely urged lawmakers not to let capitalism run amok. For example, a law passed under the current administration forbids credit card peddlers from preying on the young and inexperienced. Yet any regulation on business is also strongly opposed by right wingers. Perhaps, in this case, the Christian Conservatives got their Bible tales mixed up. Someone needs to remind them that Jesus threw the money changers out of the temple. He didnt say, Go ahead and try to make some money here. The free market will decide whether or not your business will thrive. One final Christian principle emanating from the administrations policies is that everyone should have the right to build a life with a significant other, regardless of sexuality. The idea of everyone having freedom to love as they see fit falls under the Judge not, lest ye be judged concept. As advocated by Obamas most recent call for hospital administrators to allow homosexuals visitation rights to their partners, the current administration has the right idea when it comes to the personal lives of American citizens. On the other hand, members of the Christian Right wing are quick to cast the first stone at those who dont follow their own idea of a family plan. I urge you all to consider this final contradiction. As a child growing up in a Christian home, I remember being taught to accept everyone and to help those less fortunate than myself. However, it seems that every government policy that follows one of those two principles is strongly opposed by the Christian Right Wing. The irony is getting old. How to achieve zen increasing. Pretty improbable. Moving on. It's no secret I am not a huge fan of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals. Don't get me wrong; I'm a huge animal lover. But what I don't love is any group who tries to shove their ideologues down the throats of everyone else. And boy, the members of PETA try to shove their views down my throat so often that it's hard to eat my steak. Now according to the pig protectors at PETA, consuming red meat is not only bad for you but also bad for the environment. I dont get their reasoning because apparently cows emit ozone-killin- g methane gas. I would assume eating red meat would actually improve the environment because youre getting rid of countless carbon farts with every cow slaughtered. see ZEN page 8 |
