Wilsons outburst was perhaps slightly ill mannered, but I thought it presented a golden opportunity to pull Congress away from its regularly scheduled routine of political roll-ca- ll voting and get down to serious business. Rather than apologizing in the face of condemnation, I believe Wilson should have stood his ground. After Obamas speech, Wilson should have explained why he thinks Obamas statement is a lie. Following this, Obama could then have the chance to explain why he believes it is not a lie. This kind of d head-to-hea- specific issue dis- course allows legislators to showcase their beliefs and the reasoning behind those beliefs. I think the American people would be better served if they heard an argument between politicians rather than a carefully composed and scripted speech designed to pander to as many people as possible. Voters have the right to know what the consequences of legislation will be, and they have the right to see our president and legislators defend his claims under fire. If what they say is true, then it should be a simple matter for them to defend their position and in doing so foster a better understanding of their proposals amongst Americans. Politicians who can argue their causes clearly may even clear up some mis- - conceptions that prevent people from voting then-wayConversely, if they cannot back up their ,, claims, then they have no business standing in front of Congress and the American public and using the authority of their office to pass legislation full of faulty claims. Either way, an angry debate on the is- -. sues would be beneficial. For an example of the kind of discourse I am advocating, go to YouTube and search David Cameron vs. Gordon Brown. The videos show Prime Minister questions, a regular part of Parliament, where the PM is required to answer questions from members of Parliament about policy. The heated battles between the two show- cases the kind of eye opening debate process that would be such a welcome change to the monotone march that is usually playing on . ' We need representatives to be fierce, passionate and unafraid. We need representatives who are willing to violate bland decorum and stand up for what they believe in. We need representatives who are bold arid unapologetic when it comes to fighting for changes in Congress. Sadly, we are unlikely to see such representatives in Congress. Bold lions of liberty are becoming extinct as they fail to compete with the election winning power of party' politics and pandering. Even the mere thought of getting dressed, brushing my teeth and putting one foot in front of the other is often overwhelming. Everything is suffering; home life, family, jobs, extracurricular activities, my health, yada yada. What do I have to do to get some freaking motivation to make changes in my life? How do I stick with those changes? From, Desperate for Motivation . d ' . Dear Desperate for Motivation, If sounds to me like you need a vacation. A little R&R can go a long way when you are feeling stressed to the max with no place to go and no motivation to even start the car. However, it may be best to spend this time alone. This person does not meet you with a greeting, but a thunderstorm of complaints and a swift kick to your cheer. I first noticed this with Allie during my senior year of high school. She chose me as her target, and plopped down at my side every day in humanities class. I quickly picked up on Allies repetitive downer behavior. While the rest of the class chattered about dates and good movies, parties and new restaurants, she was unloading her o list into my lap. She had piles and piles of homework and plays to practice for. She had too much to do and it would never get done. Her downer attitude soon left me depressed and stressed out with my own life until I realized how my emotions changed when I wasnt around her. In an attempt to escape, I started associating with other people in the class. Not long after this, she attached herself like a leech to another girl in the class. She had found someone new to dump her stress to-d- backpack on. But what can I say, misery loves company. Even after I moved across the state I was still running into the downers. During my freshman year at Dixie. State College, Sheri was my battle. We had great times for a while, but then the downer deep inside her showed its ugly face. Something bad was always happening to Sheri, and she was always the victim. Guys were using her, her mom refused to give her money and her teachers wanted to see her fail. Every day she blamed her failures on other people. She stopped dating good guys because those guys only want action, she regularly participated in yelling matches with her mom because her mom only liked to give money to her sisters, and she stopped attending class because she wouldnt get a passing grade anyway. Sheris attitude started rubbing off on me until I noticed the symptoms of a familiar disease. I had found DIXIE SUN Rachel Tanner, cism and utmost disremyself the spect.
