The Penguins jumped out in front in the first 10 minutes with 2, goals by midfielders Mallory Englehardt and Eleanna Mendez to make the score DSC was led by junior 2-- 0. forward Jessica Michie, who scored two goals to tie the game. Michie, a communication major from Purcel-lvillVa., said the team was extremely excited about making a comeback. We sprinted back and everybody was ready to score more goals, Michie said. The goal that gave the Lady Red Storm the lead came from junior forward Wendy Stratford in the 82nd minute. Senior midfielder Mikala Wilkes added the final goal in the closing minutes of the game. The buzz of the weekend came Monday in San Francisco as the Lady Red Storm opened the flood gates on Academy of Art winning 2, 7-- 0. Most of the Storms devastation came from Wilkes, as she scored a season high four goals in the blowout of the Urban Knights. Goals were also scored by senior forward Shannon Larsen, senior midfielder Robyn Wall and sophomore midfielder Camille Peterson. Head coach Linda Huddleston said: We had everyone healthy. There was great passing and teamwork. Michie said winning in such convincing fashion was something the team really needed. It was a confidence boost, Michie said. It was nice to come out and kill a team like that. Huddleston wants the team to get better at the little things as the team has nine days off before the next game. We need to continue improving, Huddleston said. Weve had some injuries so we need to get healthy. Well work on passing and finishing. Put that into e of 6 NFL games, 19 'Should per-llV- 1 82 NBA7NHL contests, and 162 MLB games. Lets compare some of the different major suspensions in these different leagues for fighting during competition. Todd Bertuzzi, formally of the Vancouver Canucks, attacked Steve Moore during a game in 2004. Bertuzzi attacked Moore from behind punching him in the head and driving his head into tire ice. He was suspended essentially only 20 games because of tire Hockey lockout the next season, missing basically less than 25 percent of the season for seriously injuring Moore. The longest suspension for on tire field issues in the NFL was five games and that was for then Tennessee' Titans lineman Albert Haynesworth when he stomped the head of Andre Gurode in 2006. Gurode needed 30 stitches because of the attack drat included Haynesworth taking his helmet off and stomping his head widr his cleat Haynesworth was suspended for a little over 30 percent of dre teams games drat season. Major League Baseball has handed out some of the most inconsistent suspensions for incidents. their Long suspensions have been awarded for different incidents, like Pete Rose and his shoving of an umpire in 1 988 where he was suspended for 30 days. But there are big differences between fights between players on the field. Take last years brawl between Boston Red Sox Coco Crisp and the Tampa Bay Rays. Crisp charged the mound and threw a punch at James Shields and was handed down a seven game suspension. Seven games? This is less than five percent of the professional season. There are cases like this every year where players will throw equipment such as helmets and parts of bats and receive things like five game suspensions. But there is nothing quite as ridiculous as a suspension handed down from the NBA. The Malice at the Palace has taught us this. In November of 2004 Ron Artest and other members of the Indiana Pacers found themselves in the middle of a melee. Beer was thrown on Artest and he and several other players entered the stands throwing punches at fans. Artest was suspended for 73 games, nearly 90 percent of tire season, for inciting die riot. As far as fights on the court are concerned, one of die biggest fights on die court involved the Den r UA -- From left, midfielder Mikala Wilkes, a sophomore business administration major from Cedar Hills, tries to steal the ball from defender Whitley Davis, a sophomore general education major from Sandy. The PacWest Conference is in full swing as DSC returns home to face off against three of the schools from Hawaii during Homecoming week. Its fun to travel, Kennah said. But its way more fun to play in front of your own fans. Ortiz said playing some home games will be nice after having six of their first seven games on the road. Itll be nice to have some wins at home in front of our friends and family, Ortiz said. The first game for the Red Storm is against the Chaminade University ver Nuggets and the New York Knicks in 2006. Carmelo Anthony was suspended for 15 games, nearly 20 percent of the season, for his punch and run against the Knicks Mardy Collins. Other players were suspended but Anthony received the harshest penalty for fighting with another player in years. There are so many different discrepancies in the suspensions of these different leagues. Let me state clearly that in my opinion what Blount did was not right, he d lost his cool and Hout This does not mean he should be suspended for the whole year for this punch. No one seems to take into consideration the fact that Hout had just tapped Blount on the shoulder and yelled something in his face. The players wont tell the truth. It will just turn into one of tiiose mm sucker-punche- Yes, you did, No, I didnt tilings, and no one else really heard what was said. Sportsmanship is extremely important in sports. We should hope that the younger players do not end up making the same kinds of mistakes. The punishment for Blount is unfair to say the least, and the NCAA should step in and remedy this KSlAilijiH '.ftlKJtti1' lit CFIER ONLINE AT JI!l"lYJOS.CC:,l , |
