Carole Grady, associate dean of nursing and allied health, said there were several factors that contributed to the NLNAC decision to deny accreditation to the BSN program. In addition to the faculty number issue, she said the BSNs credit requirements exceeded those required by NLNAC. Specifically, she said the number of faculty has doubled, which helps alleviate several of the pro- grams issues. The BSNs lack of accreditation may lead to complications for DSC students. Grady said some students in the program are wondering how the accreditation status will affect getting in to a graduate program. Even though many graduate programs require an accredited degree, she added that there is really not much to worry about at this point. So far, anyone who has wanted to get in to graduate school has, she said. Another concern may arise for ROT students in the BSN program who want to become officers, as they would need accreditation to be commissioned. The lack of accreditation may also be holding the program back as a whole. Vicky ONeil, assistant professor of nursing, said she thinks the BSN program will expand more rapidly once the program is officially recognized. I think the program is in its infancy stages, ONeil said. I think the reason why it has not grown more is because we dont have accreditation. Larsen agreed: I think its a pretty good setup. Currently, the BSN program at DSC has candidacy for accreditation. Members of the NLNAC will conduct another site visit in the spring of 2009 to determine if they will fully recognize the program. Jht is;) GQuDO.
