That is what Dixies offense has been about this year. The Rebels seem to get big play after big play, and their defense has been tougher than your Grandmas meatloaf. Quarterback Quinn Hampton threw for 297 yards and the defense held Phoenix Community College to minus-2- 7 yards rushing, as No. 2 Dixie won, 48-0- . The win was number 150 for Rebel Head Coach Greg Croshaw, the man who transformed the Rebels n from a program into a national powerhouse. The Rebels scored 28 points in four minutes in one of the most bizarre sequences. With 4:04 left in the first quarter, the Bears had driven down deep into Dixie territory and lined up for field goal that would have given them a 0 lead. Phoenix missed the field goal. Dixie took over at the Phoenix 21 yard line. On the very next play, Ethan Ross got a separation between he and his defender. Hampton threw a d rocket; however, Ross still had to slow down a bit to catch it. The defender caught up to Ross, but he was able to juke the would-b- e defender near the line and run into the little-know- 3-- 38-ya- -- 40-yar- end-zon- 20-ya- e. We knew that the free safety would come up on the tight end, and thats what happened. It left the middle of the field open, said Ross, who gave Hampton n credit for a ball. The pass covered 79 yards and instead of being down by three, Dixie was up More importantly, it gave Dixie momentum and turned the tide of the game. Prior to the play, the Rebels were struggling, and everything was going the Bears way. We need big plays. A good team always has big plays like that, said Ross. well-throw- 7-- oMommy & Me & More $5 OFF $50 purchase or more with this Ad At the Redcliffs Mall f? f 150 a , f 674-777- 2 Color Country Walk in Clinic Health Express 595 S. A Quinn Hampton pass and Phoenix penalty set up Tony Nielsens three-yar- d touchdown run. The Dixie defense came up with another big play. Grant Smith recovered a Bear fumble. The Rebels would just take four plays to score. Hampton hit Nielsen with a swing pass, and Nielsen turned it into yet another big play. At one point during his run, Nielsen looked as though he was going to go but he man- Ware, who caught three passes for 59 yards aged to keep himself inbounds by tiptoeing down the sideline. Ross threw a key block, slamming the last would-b- e tackier to the ground near the line, enabling Nielsen to reach the endzone. On the next series, the Dixie defense again forced a Bear turnover. Again, it was Smith who made the play. This time, Smith intercepted Lucero and returned the ball to the Bears line. On the final play in the quarter, Hampton threw a his way into the screen to Ross, who It was a middle screen and the offensive linemen made a couple of good blocks, said Ross. Suddenly, it was 28-- 0 for Dixie, instead of being 0 for Phoenix which easily could have been, just four minutes earlier. Dixie cruised from there. Dan Brigham recovered a fumble in the endzone in the second quarter. The Bears snapped the ball practically to Brigham. The snap went to the right of Lucero, right where Brigham had burst through the offensive line. It was almost as the play for Brigham. though they had tailor-mad- e In the third quarter, Hampton turned a quartertouchinto a back sneak, on a down run. Anthony Jones would add the final score in the fourth quarter. Dixie was able to keep the shutout, handing out their first goose egg of the season. The offensive line of Turnbull Tuliaupupu, John Watson, Seth Little, Brent Hogan, and Jeremy Schufelt dominated the Bears defensive line all day long. Croshaw is pleased with his teams progress so far. I dont think there is any question that this team has come together as good as any, said Croshaw. The No. 1 ranked team, Butler County Community College, Kans., lost to the No. over the team, Garden City, Kans., 44-3- 8 weekend. Dixie is expected to be No. 1 when the polls come out later this week. Dixie will more than likely be ranked No. 1 in the new poll. Croshaw said if they are No. 1, then he wouldnt mind bringing back the Utah But first Dixie will have to take care of business on the road against New Mexico Military Institute. NMMI is ranked in the Top 10, so it will be a tough game for the Rebels. NMMI features a tough running attack, but the Rebel defense has fared well against the run this year, allowing just over 30 yards per game. The Rebels, however, havent faced a team with as talented a running game as NMMIs. The Rebels still have some tough games after that with Snow College, Mesa, Arizona Western, and Glendale left on the schedule. Mesa will be in town on Oct. 23 for the Homecoming Game. Snow College, Dixies archrival, will also be at Hansen Stadium on Nov. 6. Both teams were ranked in the Top 25. In 1996, Dixies only loss came on the road to Arizona Western. The Rebels will play them once again on the road on Nov. 13. All-Star- s. pre-seas- 45-ya- Saturday was a big day for the Croshaw family and not just because of Coach Croshaws 150th win. His son, T.D. Croshaw, threw four touchdown passes for the University of Utah in their 42-- 0 win over over Louisiana-Monro- e. UPCOMING EVENTS Friday Volleyball v.
