The Dixie College Lady Rebels knocked the Glendale Community College Lady Gauchos off their high horse last Monday. Glendale is currently ranked 5th in the nation but were humbled by the Rebels. Dixie beat Glendale in a flat out battle, "We played really well against Glendale, and it was very exciting to beat the 5th ranked team in the nation," Rebel captain Amber Ryan mentioned. The two goals were scored by Dani Zuagg and Shay Hansen. Whitney Schmutz, Dani Zaugg, Shay Hansen, Kalie 2-- 0. Blood, and Sandy Nelson... No this isn't a run down of the team roster, it's a list of who scored in the complete shut out against the Apache's of Cochise College. The Rebels rampaged last Saturday and beat Cochise 0 in a big district game. Dixie fell to Pima College in their first game of last weekends road trip. "We really just weren't playing well that game," Ryan said about the 0 loss to Pima. The tenth ranked Lady Rebels will be starting their stuff on their home turf this weekend. They will host the Salt Lake Community College Bruins on Friday at 7 p.m. and on Saturday Utah Valley State College at 4 p.m. 7-- 2-- Deja Vu for Dixie Volleyball By Loni K. Knight-Ridde- r Pope Newspapers MIAMI - John Avery had just balled his little 9 self up for the best play of his baby pro career when he looked over at Rams linebacker Roman Phifer. Suddenly he blurted, "You better have your track shoes on!" Then Avery was off like a dirty sock, off to collect Dan Marinos pass for the touchdown that iced the for the Dolphins. Rams, 14-Avery was not doing a Dennis Rodman. He is just extremely and pleasantly outgoing, as when he said later: "Im like that peanut in the TV commercial - I just want to get into the candy bar." The track-shoe- s bit sort of popped out in the fourth quarter. Avery said he guessed he was "just feeling good about making a couple of blocks, really jacking up guys who weighed a lot more than me." For the record, he weighs 190, not heavy in this game of giants. Avery was also pretty sure linebacker Phifer didnt hear him. No matter. Between beating Phifer for the touchdown and then uncorking his run, the rookie redeemed one of the least watchable Dolphins offensive shows. They definitely picked the right 5-- 0, 6-- 2, 44-ya- rd 240-pou- Johnston johnstoninfowest.com This past weekend was "deja vu" for the Dixie College volleyball team. They lost to Utah Valley State College and Salt Lake Community College, but beat Westminister... deja vu of the last meeting between the teams. In the first match of the weekend, the team lost to UVSC Sophomore Tana May led the team with 12 kills. Jane Watts contributed ten digs and 21 assists, and teammate Chelle Curtis added five blocks. "We played good defense and dub pretty 5, 12-1- 5. 5, good," Head Coach Dave Johnston commented. The next match of the trip came against Westminister College. Dixie came out on top with three wins and 15-"It gave us a game to take out our frustration," Johnston said. Freshmen Stefanie Jensen tallied 27 assists, Marie Cowley made six blocks, May finished the game with 11 kills and Valerie Stewart had nine kills and 11 digs. 15-1- 1, Avery Breaks Dolphins Running Game By Edwin 8 game to black out. Not that coach Jimmy Johnson was conceding anything derogatory about his offense. Fie actually said this with a straight face: "I thought our offense played very well for three quarters. It had seven more points than the opponents." Matter of fact, Avery credited his coaches for what they have been waiting for since they picked him in the first round in the college draft in April. "All week they were making me hit the hole at 110 miles an hour," he said. "They wanted me to be more physical." TD pass, Pretty physical, run, all in the same period. But not what Avery calls a breakout game. Hes still a pee wee, and the TD was quite a while coming. He had gained fewer than 100 yards rushing total in the Dolphins' first five games, and had caught only three passes for a grand aggregate of six - count 'em, six! yards. So this was a breakout game for him. And not a minute too soon the way the Dolphins' offense was operating, or unoperating. He said it had been so long since he caught a pass for a touchdown "I didn't even know what to do when I went in the end zone. They could have done both against the Rams without Avery. It just wouldnt have been nearly as much fun. 15-1- 1, r 9. I Just when things were looking up, Dixie faced Salt Lake Community College. Freshmen Sarah Moore completed 11 kills and 11 digs. Watts set up 31 assists and 10 digs, and teammate Kathy Mounarath made three blocks. Despite these statistics, the team fell to defeat and by the scores of The results from this past weekend leave Dixie College in the eighth place position in the region. "We can move up a spot if we can knock off NIC which would put us in seventh so we won't have to play CSI in the first round of regionals," Johnston said. Johnston believes t he team is frustrated but hanging tough. "They're frustrated but still holding on to some hope," Johnston stated. The Lady Rebels will be home this Friday and Saturday. Friday they host NIC at 7 p.m. and Ricks College, Saturday, at 3 p.m. in the old gymnasium. wkm The Dixie College Honors Pro gram invites you to a public lecture presented by TIBETAN MONKS from the 19-ya- DREPUNG-LOSELIN- G MONASTERY 44-ya- ' 'S , ,v the Himalayas, Hidden behindof Tibet, and A ' aurgte of interest in ail things 1n i tbeUin particular, Tibetan especially its tradition of mystical te, temple music and dance Iras begun " ' performing arts, for centuries lo attract an enormous audience in remained largely unknown in the .
