' usy This week's page is devoted to student gripes, letters, complaints, and things that just irk us. If you have an questions, comments, or gripes of your own, send them to sunsun.fam.dixie.edu, or drop by the news Student Requests: Dependable Library Hours accessible As undergraduates at Dixie, we feel the same pain; rushing to complete term papers, projects, and research due one week before papers finals. Some of us have jobs, some don't. Some are taking over twenty credits a quarter, some only twelve. lowever, there is still a common thread for many students at Dixie. We are busy. Adding extracurricular activities, and memberships in the clubs that give the college revenue and scholarship funding adds more to the weight for some, while others feel enough stress from completing the required for every hour spent in class of homework. Having the computer nearly-forgotte- n I labs readily at the college is a great asset to many students, who do not have computers of their own. While many students have no gripes at all about the labs, or the library staff, many students do feel frustration with the constantly changing library hours. A busy life riddled with things to do and more things to do isn't half so bad when the surety that resources to accomplish these things is a given. Dependable library hours would do just that give a surety to those with hectic schedules. We are students; we do not need to worry about whether or not the library will be open. Letters to the Editor "Our style is different from Melanie's so called rockers. What is a rocker, anyway? When I hear the word, 'rocker,' I think of the eighties punk rocker. That was one thing she forgot to explain.'' Sharmon Wheeler "Country western music is more patriotic and family orientated than rock music is. I don't find it depressing at all... .what makes this nation great is its diversity. If everyone looked the way you thought they should, it would be a very boring world indeed." Anne McCorkle "There are two sides to every story. Cowboys are not the only ones that drink. I know plenty of rock fans that sit around all night drinking and pat tying most everyone parties, whether they are cowboys or rock fans." -- Heidi Hall "Making fun of others so we can feel better about ourselves is the wrong approach. ...if we want respect from others, we need to learn to respect others." Gloria Munoz Harris "I hold you. Brandy Fox, personally responsible for exploiting subjects to fill such an important section of this paper.. ..An opinion column should be held to higher standards. This is an important forum for intelligent, provocative, tasteful, and current issues. ...Leave this stuff for the Enquirer, and other imitators of newspapers." Robin Stout room. Included are excerpts from letters to the editor concerning a column run May 6, titled "I Hate Cowboys." The opinions expressed in the column were those of a student at Dixie College, and in no way represent ed those of the Dixie Sun or the Sun staff. The column was run for it's strength as a student opinion: What else are we going to put on the opinion page? The Dixie Sun is produced by and for the student body of Dixie College. Student Requests: Support for Campus Radio Station It is Wednesday morning, and the Gardner Center is full of hungry students who are milling about the Snack Bar, and lounging in the cafeteria. They are hip, jivin' young men and women, just fresh out of class, and relaxing for the day. Who knows? They may have stepped directly out of a Mountain Dew commercial or some forsaken MTV program. As these energetic, lively young hipsters knosh on a Perk Special, the gentle sounds of Aaron Neville and Linda Rondstat float through the room. Huh? This is Dixie College, and we are listening to elevator music? Often called a hub of the campus, the EDITOR'S RESPONSE: Way to shozo some Rebel spirit! The column submitted by Dixie College student, Melanie Smith, was a great example of a provocative, intelligently laid-ou- t, very current opinion. The topic of Cowboy vs. Rocker" (whatever a "rocker" may be), has been one to plague anyone living in the western United States for quite some time, now. You are right, this is a forum for tastefiil and current issues. Any issue a student of Dixie College has is "current" enough for the student newspaper, and very well should be printed. Thank-yo- u for your contributions. Gardner Center is, as Sue Lemmons, Snack Bar manager, called it, "the students home away from home." While Feter Cetera and Amy Grant may be wonderful and great, these artists somehow don't fit the atmosphere of our beloved Gardner Center. Imagine instead, shopping for the latest edition of Chemistry 101 in the bookstore and hearing the blissful sounds of our student radio station, KRDC. It's all about support. The guys n' gals at KRDC have cleaned up their language, tightened their lineups, and have become a glistening gem to behold-(rough-hew- n one, but a gem.) With programs like "Diva's of the Night," "Tire Whipping Boy," and my personal favorite, "It's Great to be Depressed With Nate Night," there are plenty of listening pleasures to behold, They need our support, fust as, (hopefully), someone out there is reading the Dixie Sun, KRDC needs to be heard. Why not blast it in the Gardner Center? Disc jockey Dean Ryan commented, "Student support ts necessary. ...we are here mainly for the students. I listen to it, even when I'm not on the air." At other colleges across the state, the campus radio station is an integral part of student life. Let's make it that way, here. It's all about support.
