To keep in step with the Age of Knowledge and to offer students the best in technology and computer training, Dixie College is purchasing the Dixie Center and converting it into a high technology computer center. Originally, the Dixie Center was built as a convention center for the community. However, as the community has grown, the need for a larger facility has developed. Therefore, during the 1995 legislative session, local officials convinced the Utah Legislature to allow Dixie College to purchase the Dixie Center and convert it into instructional space. Campaign directors plan to convert the Smiths Convention Hall into "The High Technology Computer Center at Dixie College." The facility will utilize all 12,744 square feet of the existing convention hall plus the 2,352 square feet used for conference rooms. The features of the new facility will include television and video production, multimedia instruction and production, electronic publishing, and courses focusing on networking and information access seminars. The new facility will be available for students 24 hours a day and will be equipped with computer equipment and state-of-the-- resources. lot was ripped up and replaced with a grassy as the officially Encampment Mall. This change marks the first of a three phase program to develop the Dixie College campus. The second phase of campus development is to provide 700 new parking spaces for students, faculty and campus visitors. The third phase will be a full scale landscaping program, which includes new sidewalks and planting a veritable forest of new trees. Dixie jCollege also plans to expand the area of the campus. When Harmon's grocery store leaves, Dixie plans to purchase the 6.44 acres and remodel the building to meet with campus needs. College officials are also looking for new land allocations in order to expand the campus to meet with the growing needs of the college and the community. The closest major art museum to St. George is about 300 miles away. To remedy this, Dixie College has decided to raise six million dollars and build a new facility. The facility will not only house permanent art collections but will also provide 20,000 square feet of gallery space, six modem classrooms and a 300-seamphitheater. In order for the center to meet the demands of growth, the college plans to remodel and upgrade the facility. The remodeled facility will house the cashiers office, financial aid, testing, cooperative education, ethnic diversity program, registration and records, advisement and counseling and - many other student- oriented services. The plans include resurfacing the football field and track, constructing racquetball courts, and resurfacing the tennis courts.
