Show Page 6 DIXIE SUN March 2, 1990 Sports Rebels Gain Victory OverSLCC On Roai Lewis Harper Sports Editor Just one week ago, when you could count on the Dixie College Rebels to win at home, they turn around and do the opposite. This week the Rebels went on the road with a road record. With a record like this you would think that they would more than likely lose again, but once again they did just the opposite as they claimed another road victory over the Salt Lake Community College Bruins. The Rebels not only won the game, they did it convincingly as they bombed 6 SLCC 93-8- The first half started out very shaky as the lead changed hands 9 times. Dixie scored the games first 7 points a after a Sean Petersen lay-iLester Turner steal and dunk, and a three point play by Jon Miller. With just over 13 minutes left in the first half, Dixie held a six point lead. Salt Lake then took off and made 6 unanswered points, tieing the score at 22. Neither team could seem to gain more than a 2 point lead, as the score was tied at 24, 26, and 28. The Rebels then broke that bond put in another two for the Rebels, but the Bruins Lorenzo Jarvis matched it with two of his own to as Travis Warner took an outside pass and drove two between upcourt, maintain a 4 lead. The Rebels then took off and went on a 26-- scoring defenders to make a move Dixie ahead lay-i- n to 34-3- The lead changed 7 more times in the final 5 minutes of the half. The Bruins went into the locker room leading, 48-4as Chris Fox hit a running bank shot at the buzzer. At the start of the second half, it seemed to resemble the first as the score was tied 5 more times and the lead changed hands 3 more times, before the Rebels took control. Petersen went airborne 3 times for Dixie as the got the traditional inbounds alley oop slam, a rebound basket and another dunk off of a fast break, set up by Cliff Reed as he swatted away a shot attempt by the Bruins. SLCC then retaliated and put in two consecutive plays to gain the lead Reed then once again, drove hard underneath and 56-5- 2. 58-5- 6 blitz, turning their 4 point deficit into a 16 point lead. Miller kicked off the run by scoring 2 off of a powerful rebound putback. Dixie then scored six more points before Fox scored for the Bruins. Dixie then went on to score 10 of the next 14 points. Cordin Robbins then and put in a pair of Blaine Bambrough muscled his way up for a lay-iReed led the Rebels once again as he put in 20 points while bringing in a game high 13 rebounds. Four other Rebels also went into double figures, as Petersen put in 16 followed by Miller with 15, Robbins with 13, and Turner with 12. This win by the Rebels, and Snow losing to UVCC, gives Dixie new hope in hosting the Region Tournament. Dixie will meet the Snow College Badgers on Friday, finishing up the 1989-9- 0 season. wj Pulling up for a quick jump shot, Lester Turner puts in 2 to pull Dixie to a 93-8- 3 victory Friday night over SLCC. h BaseballTeam Claims Wins Over Weekem second game Lewis Harper Sports Editor Baseball season has once again hit the city of St. George and the Dixie College Rebels Baseball Team is off to a good start once again. The Rebels opened their 1990 season by splitting a pair of games on Friday and swept the next 2 games on Saturday. These victories came as Dixie hosted the BYU Junior Varsity. that day. The following day Dixie found success as they upset the Cougars 12-- 2 in only 5 innings, and then earned an victory in the second game 8-- 7 of that day. To start out the first game, BYU shot out and scored first as they crove in one run during the first inning, followed by another in the 2nd. Dixie was not going to be held scoreless, as they drove in 5 of their own during the second half of the 2nd inning. Sid Smith opened with a double for the Rebels. The next two batters made it to base on walks, loading up the In the first game it seemed to be a little hard for the Rebels to score as they were held scoreless for the first 3 innings. Things soon changed as they started to pound the bases. Scott Peterson then ball in the 4th, 5th, and 6th brought in Smith with a innings. This ended the game as Dixie led by 10 after the 5th inning with the score of 12-In the second game it seemed that the Rebels were going to end this round in the same manner, as they drove in 4 runs in the first inning. Dixie then added another ran in the 2nd inning, as Wilson smashed a solo homerun. Brain Swapp then went the distance in the second win for the Rebels as he allowed only one earned run throughout the game.
