Show Page 14 DIXIE SUN March 7, 1986 Intramural The 1986 Intramural Basketball season finally came to an end Wednesday night, with both leagues having very competitive games in the semi-finaand finals. In the A league semifinals, Fresh destroyed The Rabbits and The Pokers stopped Too Cold to Hold In the B league Andys outlasted The Slug Busters 52-4and the Parkers stunned The Who on a baseline jumper at the buzzer. In the finals, the A league ls 84-4- 72-5- 9. semi-final- s, 6, 53-5- 1, game matched undefeated Fresh with The Pokers, and controversy broke out right from the beginning. Fresh controlled the early part of the game, and jumped out to a advantage with four minutes left in the half. The Pokers managed to cut the margin down to eight points, and Fresh held a 29-2- 1 lead at the midway point. In the second half, The Pokers gradually whittled away at the lead, and when Freshs team captain Archie Reese fouled out with five minutes remaining, The Pokers appeared to have the advantage. But Fresh held tough, and with only :40 left to play, The nt Ends; Pokers, Andys Claim League Titles But Darrin but Fresh rebounded and The Pokers led 41-3- anyway, for a potential game-tyin- g shot. Fresh, however, threw the ball away, and when the officials signaled the ball in Barnes drove the lane, and his leaping leaner with :08 left fell through, sending the game into overtime. In the OT, The Pokers controlled the tip, but were unable to convert, and Fresh pulled down the board. Barnes was eventually fouled with :06 showing on the clock, but his attempt was off, and OT number two was forced. Again neither team could put the ball in the basket, and although Bryant Hill canned a and set-u- p possesion of The Pokers, tempers began to flare. Both sides began to argue, and after a few punches were thrown, it was eventually ruled that Fresh was disqualified on account of poor sportsmanship, Pokers wound up with the 1986 championship. The B league final saw Andys and The Parkers scrap it out in a battle of the undefeated teams. Andys raced out to a 6 lead, only to see The Parkers storm back with 10 unanswered points, and grab a 23-1- lead of their own. But Andys regrouped and tore off a 13-- run towards the end of the half, taking a 36-2- 9 lead in26-2- 3 3 to halftime. After the intermission, 59-4- one-and-o- forty-fo- desperation shot, ot it was ruled that time had ran out before the shot was taken. So, a third OT was played, with controversy playing the biggest role before the game was finally over. The Pokers again controlled the jump, and Bruce Bishop was fouled with only two seconds elapsed in the period. Bishop hit one of two and when Fresh missed at the other end, Rick McArthur was also fouled, and made one of the two foul shots, lead giving the Pokers a 1 with only :41 remaining. Fresh took it down, and Barnes was fouled with :34 left to play.
