Show Karl Brooks Sworn In Popular Dixie Colof lege Student and CommunKarl F. ity Services Brooks, was sworn into the office of St. George Mayor on January 4th. Brooks took the oath of office as administered by Circuit Court Judge Robert F. Owens in the city council chambers before a large crowd that included city and county officials, friends and family members of the new mayor, as well as city employees and St. many interested George residents. Brooks Democrat defeated the Republican mayoral candidate Sharon Isom 2,218 to 1,602 votes in the November election. Mayor Brooks thanked his wife and mother and mother-in-law- , both of whom were and said, present, Many of you are special people in my life. Thanks for being here. You know, we are lucky to live in a country where these kind of political changes happen in an orderly manner. A resident of Bloomington and a native of Price, Utah, John L. Bell, recently made a 510.000 cash gift to the Dixie College Development fund. In making the donation to the college, Mr. Bell said, Im now a resident of the St. George area, and I believe in supporting the educational program in the area in which I reside. The development fund was established earlier this year by the college administration as a three year funding raise to operation 5300.000 to be used as a scholarship endowment to aid in increasing the amount of money available for scholarships to worthy students. Mr. Bell, until February of this year, owned a coal mining operation in Carbon County and continues his interest in a logging and construction comin Roseburg, pany Oregon, where he has been in business for over 26 years. As a young man, he graduated from Car- - 2nd Lt. in the Air Force as a bombardier-navigatoUpon his return to Utah after the war, he went into the coal business and other ventures in the Price area then moved to Oregon Roseburg, 1 950s the during where he continued in business to the present time.
