Show FRIDAY, MAY 28, 1965 LYIItl CHRISTENSEN THE DIXIE SUN - Athlete of Year At the Las Vegas Bowl game last Thanksgiving, Lynn was voted the outstanding back of the game. For those unfamiliar with Lynns prowess, watching him has made believers of many especially Sark Arslanian who didnt rest until he had the old man under his wing at Weber State, where Lynn immediately took over one of the starting halfback slots. One of Lynns greatest assets is his unselfishness, and Lynn is probably a better blocking back than a running back which is helping speedster Henry Owens of Weber to sleep better at nights. The student body should be proud to have an athlete who is in every sense a gentleman to represent us both on and off the play- Rebels tlab 7 Firsts p 1 3 13-- According to Coach Allred, next years basketball team will be a contender all the way, and with just a break or two, the skys the limit. There are some fine experienced ball players coming back from this years team which comrecord. The Rebels piled a 19-will lose such fine players as honKen orable mention Belka to Utah State, and the other Bob Cuff will be carrying his talent northward to CSU. The two hatchetmen, Lynn Christensen and Tom Crittendon will be playing basketball on the football field for Weber State, where their roughness will look more at home, .he Ivory twins will separate, with Mike continuing on to dental school and brother Dave will be back to help the Rebels with his clutch substitution play. Ralph Stansfield will probably spend his junior and senior year on an LDS mission, and Lynn Perks will probably go to USU. 6 . in J"' t Where Will They Go By LAWRENCE HUNSACKER was a The school year 1964-6of and achievement success year for Dixie College athletic teams. The Rebels football squad, possibly the best in Dixies history, finished in the elite top-terating of J.C. for the second national straight year. It was also Dixies conference consecutive second championship. The basketball team missed the conference title by an Tracksters were second only to Boise J. C. Wrestling was introduced into the schools athletic program for the first time, and Dixie teams also participated in ing field. baseball and tennis. Where are some of the graduatICAC ing athletes going that made these achievements possible? Most of them are headed to We ber State with former Dixie coach, Arslanian. Lynn Christiansen, Vic Vincent, Paul Pace, Lee Bunnell, Tex Stafford, Joe Blockovich and Cordell Ferry have already enrolled at Weber. Ends Ron McCall and Lawrence Hunsacker along with By MONTE VRE NON tackle Vern Bailey will join Coach The Dixie College cindermen fin- Arslanian fall quarter. Tackles ished the season by placing second Glenn Gardner and Rich Huggins in the annual conference meet. The are the only football players that to Boise did not travel to Weber. Glenn enRebels were runners-urolled at BYU while Rich returned Junior College. Boise received 85 points to Dixies 51'2. However the Rebels collected more first place medals than any other team. Coach Slades athletes also set two new conference records. The first record came in the mile relay. Ken Kindall, Leroy Wright, Ed Blainey ard the old man Phil Morrison set the new record at 3:2S.2. The $ old record was 3:30. The other record was set by Monte VreNon in the poe vault. VreNon jumped to completely obliterate the old mark of Those athletes who brought home first place medals were: Mark Hansen in the high hurdles, Wright in the 100, Phil Morrison in the 440, John Barrus in the mile, George Glines in the discus, the mile relay team and VreNon in the pole vault. Track Finals ROUiiDBALL FUTURE By LES MATHSON Lynn Christensen, alias the old man, alias A1 Biggety, alias the hornet, was selected by the Honors and Awards Committee as the outstanding athlete of the year. Lynn is from Providence (South Cache) Utah. He attended the new defunct South Cache High School where he in football, starred basketball, baseball and track. Lynn has served two years in the National Guard, where sergeants were understandably hesitant in giving him orders. Most of them would rather have taken orders from Lynn such is his commanding personality. Lynn lettered seven times at Dixie, and participated in every organized sport that the school had to offer. PAGE : 5 n eye-las- h. line of center Nolan Archibald and forward Kent Davis (both regulars this year) and possibly Bruce Jones will be very lean, very fas,., and extremely tough on the boards, and without a doubt as fine a shooting front line as can be found anywhere. Coach Allred reports that Dean Perkins, who will be released from an LDS mission Dec. 1, will be back. Perkins was an all conference guard on the championship team of and will be a wel A strong forward 62-6- to his former school the University of New Mexico. Ken Belka Basketball and Bob Cuff are headed north too. But Ken will carry the colors of Utah State and Bob will be representing CSU next year. Wrestler Dick Ostergaard who represented Dixie in the nattional werstling meet, is now wrestling with a new problems. He cant decide between Utah State and an LDS mission. Ken Caputo, Dixies outstanding shortstop, will sell his baseball talent to either the University of Utah or Utah State. And running Johnny Barrus will run to Utah State fall quarter. come sight on the guard line, and teamed with Monte VreNon, could give the Rebels the finest pair of guards in the entire JC ranks next year. Coach Allred spent the last week end proselyting (the closest hell ever come to missionary work) and has some good prospect from both Utah and some of the adjoining states. Of course the bulk of his recruiting will be done this summer, and if he can just come up with a good big man to partially fill the shoes of Ken Belka, he will have to work overtime to find something to cuss about next year. The schedule for next year has the Rebels tentatively playing 28 ballgames, with trips into Arizona, Co.crado and California. The Dixie men are also uled to play the freshmen of all of the four year schools in the state, and the future looks brighter than ever. If I know Coach Allred, years team will be next better than ever, because in Coach Allred, we have one of the finest coaches in the junior college ranks. From The Editor's Pen By KEROS BROWN It has been the policy of the sports page this year to give credit where credit is due, and in keeping with this policy, may we just opine briefly on the merits of Coach Doug Allred. Most coaches are only as successful as the boys they can recruit, and when a coach has the ability to take raw material and mold it into a championship team this shows the mark of a true coach. May we just illustrate by pointing out that Monte Vre Non didnt know what defense was unt Allred got hold of him, and he is now the most sticky fingered defender you ever saw. Arch had never played offense or defense. Kent Davis average more points in college than he did in high school. The credit goes to Coach Allred, and we salute him. 1 1 i |
