Show Friday, January 15, 1960 THE DIXIE SUN TWO SOUTHERN QUILL LITERARY CONTEST The announcement of Southern Quill contests, which begin Monday, should ignite the creative spark within many opporcampus poets, authors, and artists. This is once-a-yein ideas and print. crazy tunity for them to put daydreams g Some of the stories and poems in previous editions of this annual literary publication have been excellently written, often by students who never really gave themselves credit for having any ability to write. Of the many themes written during high school and college, very few are ever written with the idea of presenting them to the public; however, many of these student manuscripts are worthy of our attention. Many times English teachers have occasion to comment on the worth of a composition, but no one else is given the chance to share the ideas or entertoinment it might contain because the instructors enthusiasm must be voiced only with a red pencil. This is why we have the Southern Quill. A GREAT DEAL of Dixies talent lies in people who have never really attempted to see if they could write or draw. Some of you might remember Mel Reisner, who was with the paper staff last quarter. This Idaho lad came to the publications office and asked if he might try out for the paper. He had come here to play football but was unable to participate because of a mixup in his transfer from BYU. He said he had never tried writing, but that he had the urge to give it a whirl. The fall quarter issues of the Dixie Sun are ample proof that his urge opened up a whole new world for him. His Halloween and Christmas stories as well h as his reporting speak for themselves. Mel plans to continue his journalistic bent at BYU. THIS EXAMPLE is cited for the purpose of putting a challenge to those amongus who are a little shy about entering such contests as these three sponsored by the Southern Quill. Many will never know what talents they do possess until they give it a try. This magazine, composed entirely of original student work, will be distributed during Spring Quarter. Those who see their names and their work in print will have something of real value. Those whose names arent in print but which could have been, will just kick themselves for not giving it a try. ar prize-winnin- ORE WE o like fDlCESIUM WOOL 60 TO THE - WE LAS to tell you what PERMANGANATE HAVE SCMEONE HERE WHO WE Miy SULR1RIC AD happens when WITH CONCENT WFP 2 Heinrich Schnibble LETTERS TOTIE EDITC3 Gestem Morgen ich bin upwoken und lookin aus dem Winder, und This is a belated thanks to the der Schnee(!) ist covernuppen die person who left a sheaf of poems, almost thirty in number, in my box Grunde!
