Show te1 Po'19"V' 1101WVIIPVIllitleolt9010§Nr iT rir loolgA0-100"V0- b ENTERTAINMENT Friday The Salt Lake Tribune a 1 4 — 4 (-4ir 13 4-- - rEvita7 proves a revolutionary - : - 't or" 't 1 '1 1 ty r4 00e7 vbf ' dV !!t tattaINS Sherilyn Fenn and William Baldwin in comedy "Three of Hearts" THE SALT LAKE TRIBUNE IF You Go If you have but one musical to see this year let it be Pioneer Theatre Company's impassioned interpretation of "Evita" Under the discerning eye of guest director John Going this final collaboration of Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber has become much more than a samba Yes "Don't Cry for Me Argentina" the show's signature song that everyone knows the first five words to remains a looming presence But at long last here is a new production of this London import that plunges underneath the haunting melody to provide audiences with a deeper context for the music There is a ferocity to the staging an urgency in the voices that evokes a feeling of impatience and revolution After all this is Argentina in the '40s a time when Juan Peron and his ambitious second wife Maria Eva Duarte Peron wielded their misguided power over the South American country They were not a couple to emulate — Juan an egotistical military dictator with an unsatiable lust for young women Eva 24 years his junior a sultry seductress who would sleep with or step on whomever she needed to reach What: Pioneer Theatre Company's "Evita" by Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber When: Tonight at 8 Saturday 2 and 8 pm continues through May 22 Where: Pioneer Memorial Theatre 1340 E 300 South Salt Lake Ctiy Tickets: $9 to $2750 available at PMT box office one-not- e 'Three of hearts:' Keeping her sexual orientation secret from her family Connie hires Joe a male escort played by William Baldwin to be her companion at a wedding Surprised to discover that Joe actually has some charms Connie gets an idea: Hire him to date Ellen and pay him to break her heart This artificial premise is executed with warmth and humor by this trio of actors As Connie Ms Lynch puts up a hard facade at first But eventually the actress reveals her character's soul Connie even can laugh at the social dilemmas her lesbianism creates Through the course of the film Mr Baldwin's male prostitute gains a conscience Much to the dismay of his "boss" Joe realizes that sex can lead to love and commitment Meanwhile Ms Fenn's Ellen is the victim in all this a pawn unwittingly caught in a mean game even though the other players' intentions are not completely evil But Ellen won't forgive them anyway She's strong too "Three of Hearts" (rated B for rough language and sexual situations) succeeds because it doesn't reduce the three main characters love triangle rings warm true Three of Hearts Sexual confusion in the '90s is the stuff of a surprisingly warm comedy "Three of Hearts" is a menage ci trois with a distinctively 190s twist As it explores sexual orientation and confusion it threatens to become too hip and relevant for its own good But under the direction of Yurek Bogayevicz the Polish di- rector who showed great sensitiv- ity in directing "Anna" in 1987 "Three of Hearts" is an engaging romantic comedy The three char acters who form each side of an aimsual love triangle leave their symbols behind charand become acters We come to care about them "Three of Hearts" begins as a relationship ends Connie a tough redhead played by Kelly Lynch is begging her lover to stay Ellen a New York University literature professor played by Sherilyn Fenn is adamant: It's over Ellen is in the throes of confusion over her sexuality She needs time and space to sort things out - social-politic- al flesh-and-bloo- d to representations of sexual points of view Sure they come from different orientations but in the end they are more complicated — and therefore their stories are more compelling — Terry Orme -
