"Hardly" Mitchell said "My goal has always been the same: skate as well as 1 can" Mitchell the 1986 national junior champion has all the jumps and enough showmanship to make him a crowd favorite The judges were slower in recognizing his appeal but a superb technical program to Michael Bolton's version of "When A Man Loves A Woman" seemed to catapult him The women's event figures to be a coronation for Nancy Kerrigan the Olympic bronze medalist and world silver medalist With Kristi Yamaguchi gone to the world of ice shows and advertising — at least for now — Kerrigan has moved to the forefront Her main competition should be Tonya Harding Gillooly the 1991 American champion who comes off a disappointing '92 season 4 W i e -- -' WOMMEMIMMEMOI ry Metz had emerged as the top freshman a year ago with a pair of carry the Utes No one will bear more weight than senior Kristen Kenoyer the who holds the NCAA record at 3975 "Kristen is the most consistent gymnast we've ever had" said Marsden "A third place finish and two fourths in the NCAA speak for her- Kenoyer won the NCAA vault title last April and recorded two perfect lOs during the season on beam Senior Tracy Richard who went twice last year B-- 1 top-ranke- d out-of-sha- 2 U Continued From Eddie Gornik Utah's junior men's figure skater will compete in the 1993 National Figure Skating Championships in Phoenix beginning Monday Gornik 16 is competing in figures and freestyle events he has qualified for 1 i nationals the past three ) years Last month's fourth place finish at the sectional corn- petition in Las Vegas quail fled him for the national competition As a novice men's competEddie Gornik itor last year in Orlando Fla Gornik finished sixth in the national competition This fall the United States Figure Skating Association granted Gornik the Competitive Skating Assistance Program award which helps finance skater education and development Son of Edward and Holly Gornik he trains at the Utah Figure Skating Club in Bountiful under the direction of coach Kris Sherard PRESS 8 Sunday January Marsden Guarantees 'lies Will Continue Dynasty Gornik Represents Utah The year after for Mark Mitchell almost wasn't because the year before wasn't what he envisioned Or deserved Mitchell placed third in the US Figure Skating Championships last year giving him a place on the American team at the Olympics At least it should have earned him a plane ticket to Albertville and the experience of his competitive life But Todd Eldredge the 1990 and '91 US champion dropped out of those nationals with a back injury His status was enough for officials to place him on the Olympic team ahead of Mitchell however Understandably Mitchell was crushed Not even the placating move of putting him on the US squad for the 1992 World Championships eased the dispppointment for Mitchell "I had lost the desire to keep up" Mitchell said as he prepared for the 1993 nationals at Phoenix where he will be one of the favorites "But I realized I wasn't being fair to myself "I tell people The best doesn't mean winning or standing on top of the medals podium but giving everything you have' If I had quit it would have meant I wasn't giving it everything I had" The Mitchell probably belonged in the Olympics Although Eldredge was healthy he was and struggled through the demanding practices He finished 10th and didn't do much better at worlds placing seventh Mitchell meanwhile took full advantage of his opportunity at the worlds He should have been at the 1990 worlds after placing third at the nationals but he was bumped replaced by 1989 US champion Christopher Bowman who missed the '90 nationals with an injury This time skating in place of Olympic silver medalist Paul Wylie who was not chosen for the world team Mitchell wound up fifth His new free skate program was dynamic and Mitchell surged to the head of a strong American men's class Does he consider himself a favorite for the nation- - — SPORTS The Salt Lake Tribune 17 1993 4" |
