| Show - - e TRENDS Friday The Salt Lake Tribune F3 March 6 1992 i - Americans pander British write to Cosmo woman By Juliet Wittman KNIGIIT !UDDER NEWS SERVICE As dozens of American magazines falter die and transform their contents in an effort to attract readers one solution is being tried with increasing frequency Hire a Brit More specifically hire an Englishwoman Tina Brown has done highly visible wonders for Vanity Fair Anna Wintour is in the process of electrifying Vogue and Elizabeth 't'i Tilberis former editor of British Vogue is about to take a shot at reviving the moribund Harper's Bazaar as editor in chief What are British editors doing right? At a time when many American publications seem intent on dumb-lu- g down content avoiding difficult issues or remaining pallidly inoffensive their British counterparts are refusing to play it safe And they are not assuming that their readers are stupid On a recent trip to England I noticed several things about the country's women's magazines They were more combative more involved in politics and international issues more apt to take ethical stands wickeder — and generally much more intelligently written and edited — than their American counterparts American editors apparently imagine their readers as occupying a hermetically sealed little universe where sex appeal relationships and personal advancement are all that matter Serious issues are allowed to enter the mix only when they can be shown to have direct personal impact on the reader: The magazines will deal with breast cancer or breast implants date rape marital happiness or problems arising from a I : rt 1 1 1 --2 1 :71- - i ' 1 4 4 4 a -- 'Jd c“7 :1' i' 4 II i tips — the latter written in the tone of a travel agent's press release The food section consists of two huge photographs and three simple recipes The message seems to be that the Cosmo girl must be able to cook a dish for her man or for her friends (doubtless yogurt and a glass of champagne suffice for her own consumption) The American Cosmo does carry a regular column on dieting another national obsession Both publications use Irma family illness: but they won't discuss Winnie Mandela or the Gulf War and they'll tend to avoid like the plague any articles on WO Men's issues that could possibly be construed as feminist A brief comparison of the Cosmopolitan that appeared in England in January with the one issued here the same month is instructive Both are filled with the kind of breathless prose the sort of silly fluffy sometimes delicious stories we expect from Cosmo On the cover of the American edition the model poses in a tiny geld dress her breasts spilling from its generous cups Her British counterpart wears a bright yellow turtleneck and a stylish cap (The British tend to be less fixated on breasts than Americans) British Cosmo features a number of black and Asian faces including oi' : ' 0 ildiVi 1::"'i AO' ' tY ' 1' ' 41111: ii:' tu : I '17 '14 4 " ' :I"' i c (' --4 ' 1 ? 1 71 A00 t- - ' il LI I '?
