Show - I 136 By Jon Ure ro s tr) r Sunday January 19 1992 Midvale Turning Minus to Plus to Clean Up Toxic Slag otIti--13- (e'llt LOCAL The Salt Lake Tribune In five years about half of Midvale will rise from the ashes of toxic slag The stigma that usually accompanies Env- ironmental Protection Agency superfund cleanups worried officials and residents of this city of 12000 It also worried the EPA "But out of the woodwork people began to offer help" said John Newman an associate of Newblood Inc coordinators of the city's revitalization in the wake of the cleanup of 15 million tons of tailings from Sharon Steel and Midvale Slag mining sites It turns out those people who wanted to help were heavy hitters Federal Housing and Urban Development the EPA the Utah Economic Development Corporation Salt Lake County Housing and others decided to to turn what generally has been a negative experience into an unprecedented cooperative effort - Following are recent actions taken by municipal governments along the Wasatch Front: BOUNTIFUL CITY COUNCIL Voted for preliminary approval of a new restaurant at 401 W 500 South The Su Casa Mexican restaurant will open in several months The council also announced retirement of City Planning Director Jon Reed Boothe who worked for the city of Bountiful for almost 30 years Members voted to authorize the city manager to hire a new planning and redevelopment director said "We knew that the EPA would be pretty excited because they get kicked around wherever they go" said City Administrator Michael &ler "It's a pilot project for the EPA" "It defies all the typical thinking about government" Mr Newman said "It's turning into a pilot project with national attention with so much cooperation going on "Everybody's trying to do it right rather than trying to cover their own backside" he added What everybody did was to look way beyond the $27 million cleanup old "Some of the property is shacks" said Mr &ler "Why have clean soil n old shack?" around a Mr Slier said while it would be nice to knock it all down and start over with a "city of the future" the next best thing was to shoot for revitalization in conjunction with the slag cleanup "That's where the feds come in" Mr Si ler THE SALT LAKE TRIBUNE Mr Si ler and Mr Newman are amazed at the amount of cooperation the city is getting They are writing federal grant requests looking at a $15 million congressional appropriation and unprecedented help from the EPA for the pilot program The result will be a revitalized historic old Main Street and refurbished residential areas to the north south and west boy'- west of ders of the city Mr Si ler said s infrastrucWhile developing ture outdoor amphitheaters and revitalizing historic homes and business areas is fine the city council demanded that no one be removed from their homes "Residents won't pay and they'll be able to live in a better home" said Mr Slier Results of a survey of 783 residents and businesses regarding the cleanup and revitalization should be known Jan 27 Mr Newman said mini-park- n run-dow- run-dow- full-blow- n WEST JORDAN CITY COUNCIL Passed interlocal cooperative agreements with Salt Lake County and its incorporated cities establishing procedures to tJ termine command hierarchy at the scenes of crimes and fires Fire agreements also included Park City and South Davis The council also approved another traffic signal at the intersection of 9000 South and 2200 West Vi $16651 - MURRAY CITY COUNCIL tri I) -- 4- -- ri) fit 72 g N-- i '''s- 111 Changed its landscaping ordinance to require a concrete barrier to surround any landscaping around driveways or other areas subjected to vehicle traffic and required such areas to be maintained by a sprinkler system The council will hold midyear budget reviews next week Hear ings Wednesday between 5 pm and 7 pm will include the fire department emergency operations parks and recreation and Jordan River Parkway Fund Thursday the council will consider the police department budget at 5 pm and the public works and water budgets at 5:45 pm Reappointed William J Neves to the Murray City Planning and 1 -- 11 li!
