Show The Salt Lake Tribune, A9 Monday, August 18, 1986 If these letters dont take the cake Dear Ann Landers: I live in a Florida city with a large population of older people on fixed incomes. Recently you published a recipe for a cake that you said could be made for $2.05. You listed the cost of each ingredient. I hate to disagree with you, Ann, but I think you are wrong. Good quality margarine: You list the cost for three sticks. In our area we cant buy three sticks. We must buy four sticks. The cost is 99 cents. Three cups of sugar: The smallest quantity of sugar you can buy is a package for 89 cents. Three cups of flour: Like sugar, flour comes in a bag for 80 cents. Vanilla extract is $1.19 a bottle. Lemon extract is $1.26. Almond is $1.15. I don't have these items on hand. Neither do most women on a fixed income. And, by the way, ginger ale costs 28 cents a can around here. Your bargain cake would actually cost $7 52. That's a lot of money for folks who are struggling to get by. Last winter a great deal of attention was drawn to people who live on Soci- ety Security. They were shoplifting from supermarkets and eating dog food. And you come up with a recipe for cake! Why dont YOU wake up and smell the coffee? Annoyed in St. Petersburg, Fla. Dear Pete: You make me sound like Marie Antoinette. Gimme a break, Lady. And please read on. From Muskegon, Mich.: 1 tried the cake recipe yesterday and it was a big hit. Everyone asked for seconds, who nevincluding my mother-in-laer eats desserts From Edina, Mo.: My kids hate pound cake but they loved yours. I improved on it by adding an orange frosting They said it was the best they ever ate. From Palm Beach, Fla.: I used your recipe to make cupcakes and they turned out fabulous. You ought to do a food column. Dear P.B.: Thanks a heap. I already have a job. From San Jose, Calif.: That cake was a disaster. It was flat as a pancake. I called my mother and she said, I knew it would be a flop. There was no baking powder in it. That's why I didn't try it." So, dear readers, those are just a few of the letters I received. So far full-tim- e Anatomy of a health craze By Dennis Hinkamp Consumer Information Writer Utah State University Dennis Health has become such big business that it is hard to keep up with weekly wonder cancer cures, diets, programs and Hinkamp books. At one time or another most of us have received a letter from a co- worker, church member, neighbor, friend or acquaintance that reads something like this: John and I have recently become local distributors for (fill in the blank). Ever since we started using (blank) our lives have been much more (blank). You are invited to order (blank) from us for a limited time only at the low, low price of (blank). Sincerely, Your closest, most intimate (would I lie to you?) friend. Even people who know that I write a consumer column keep sending me these letters and visiting me. Why? Because they all truly believe that their health product is the one that really works. Cynic that I am, though, I think folks are many of these more interested in making a healthy profit than in building healthy bodies. And, it is possible to make a healthy profit. Im not picking on a particular health and weight-los- s product, but one that I have followed closely over the years is known as Herbalife. Its history could be used as a blueprint health promotions. for modern-daTake for an example a high school dropout named Mark Hughes. About seven years ago Hughes began selling a formula called Pro-Vit- a weight-los- s on the beaches of California. Today Hughes owns controlling interest in a company that earns upward of $500 million per year. The company is Herbalife International. In 1982 the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) found two harmful herbs in the product. The two herbs were removed. The Canadian Department of Health has accused Herbalife of false and misleading health claims. The company has been accused of illegal pyramid sales practices in California. Most recently, Herbalife settled out of court on a wrongful death suit. Herbalife products themselves were not viewed as the primary cause of death. However, misinformation sup health-produ- Submit well-meani- y now-defun- plied by a company representative caused the user to ignore adverse symptoms which normally would have caused him to seek medical aid. The literature supplied with the product advised the man that when he started using Herbalife he would experience adverse symptoms that were "just a sign that the product is working to cleanse the body of toxins built up over years of improper eating and lifestyle. Mark Hughes admits he has no formal nutrition education. He has spent most of his life as a salesman and Herbalife has prospered in spite of the founders lack of nutrition education, various attempts to discredit the product and the general disdain of trained nutritionists. Human psychology regarding nutrition information is still a perplexing issue. Most of us wouldnt trust our car repairs to anyone but a trained mechanic, but we are often willing to make decisions about our health based on the advice of some friend of a friend who is selling some magic powder. fund-raise- picture before wedding a The great increase in the number of area weddings in our makes it possible for The Tribune to publish only the engagement or wedding photograph, but not both. g To assure publication, photographs for use with wedding announcements in The Tribune should be in the office of the Lifestyle Dept., Room 201, Tribune Bldg., at least one week before day of the wedding ceremony. handled, The Tribune can assume no responsibility for pictures submitted.
