Show The Salt Lake Tribune, Learning to signs teachers project By Ann Kilbourn Tribune Lifestyle Writer When class work is completed, Jody Andes has student Kimo Bird teach her five new vocabulary words. As a Bonneville Junior High School teacher, she maintains that vocabulary enhancement in sign language is a matter of survival. It is important to know how to say things like . . . hamburger." Using arms and hands, Mrs. Andes speaks to Kimo in the graceful, demonstrative and intriguing sign language of the hearing impaired. A story about Kimo, who uses the byline Adren Bird, was in The Salt Lake Tribune Lifestyle Section Feb. 16. Hearing impaired, Kimo is not a typical student in the journalism class Mrs. Andes teaches. She works to ensure that he is considered a successful reporter. In the spring, Bonneville students can sign up to be in the journalism class and work on the student newspaper. Kimos application impressed the teacher. She decided he would be a good addition to the staff. From the paper he submitted, I could tell he was ambitious and really wanted to write for the school paper. I chose him for the 1985-8- 6 staff. Well, an opening came up and Dr. Anderson asked me to teach. This is the second year she has taught the journalism class. To prepare, she read journalism books. There are 11 students in the journalism class. The small class size allows Mrs. Andes to work with students on an individual basis. The students produce a Bonneville By- - line issue every six weeks. The kids are so proud of their work. For the first time, they realize the amount of effort involved in getting the facts, scheduling interviews, arranging time for photographs, writing and editing stories, keeping articles interesting and entertaining Students get together with Mrs. Andes to discuss topics and individual beats. They volunteer for beats. Our next issue comes out at the beginning of April. This issue is produced by the students. I wont help determine the content. Im sure they will do a good job. This is demonstrated by studies done by The High Scope Educational Re Shop weekdays search Foundation. Kindergartens are a vital resource for our children and our communities. This unrealistic impression may stem from the fact that most quality kindergartens are very different classfrom the typical grade-schoroom. The emphasis on exploration and discovery (and absence of children sitting at desks) may convey a sense of lack of structure. The attention to d activities and on products may give the impression that goals havent been set for children. The concentration on play, social and emotional development, motor development and sensory experience may suggest that hard academics are being ignored. In many ways, kindergarten is a socializing experience. It orients children to the ways of school and society. It helps them develop relationships outside the home and view themselves as successful independent people in the world. Kindergarten initiates the development of work habits, curiosity and positive feelings about learning and school. In most communities, kindergartens are strongly supported, nurtured and viewed as valuable and necessary programs. In others, kindergartens are considered a frill.
