The decision she made is one that is not supported by university poli-- T cy, spokesman Brent Harker said of We director Tracy Hainsworth. dont endorse casting or hiring or any other decisions based on race. On Wednesday, Michelle Harris said she was told that although she was qualified for the dancing role, she didnt get the part because Ms. Hainsworth felt audiences would redact negatively. The point is, Tracy made a bad I .decision, Harker said. She was reprimanded verbally and told to resolve '.the situation. Ms. Hainsworth, who is from Salt Lake City, then offered Miss Harris 'the job of production assistant, which ;she accepted, Harker said, but she had some difficulties with that and failed to show up. Z Dr. Harold Oaks, chairman of the ,BYU Theater and Cinematic Arts said the director misread Cthe communitys attitude on racial --matters. She had perceived an audience here in Utah would be bigoted, .he said. Ms. Hainsworth said Miss Harris " was denied the role because she .didnt have the talent. She said Miss 1; : I Harris has an adequate voice and adequate dancing ability. She did not have what I was looking for, and neither did 118 other people. Miss Harris also had an attitude problem, Ms. Hainsworth said. She was extremely hard to work with and unable to work with the other actors in the play. However, Miss Harris said the director told me the reason I was not cast in the role was because I was black. Miss Harris said she does not believe the community is intentionally prejudiced toward blacks, who make up less than 1 percent of the 26,000 student body at the The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-da- y Saints sponsored school. Im not mad at BYU, said Miss Harris, a Mormon, but I think the whole thing was unfair. She said she was denied opportunities while attending a predominantly white school in Philadelphia and that was a major factor in her decision to attend BYU. I came to school to get away from it. BYU was the last place I expected to find a racial problem, she said. Harker said it was important to point out this was a student production, of which there are some 90 a year. He said major productions at BYU have included black cast members and that in one, the role of Pinocchio was played by a black. Garn Berates Coverage Of Shuttle Tragedy By Dan Dickson Tribune Correspondent OGDEN The national media are ' eager to find someone to blame for space shuttle Challengers explosion and so are acting like vultures, Sen. Jake Gam told students at Weber State College. The Challenger accident was a personal tragedy to me. I lost seven Mifriends, including Astronaut chael .Imith, who trained me for my mission. But what has really disturbed me, especially the past two or three days, is all the vultures looking for someone to blame, especially those connected with the national jnedia, Garn said. The point is, we have an objective scientific crew analyzing what has happened. Let them find the problem, fix it, and lets get flying again, Sen. Garn said. Sen. Gam hasnt put much stock in the memos that allege there was a failure waiting to happen. Gam was told one memo sent to NASA claimed there would be a failure in one out of 35 of the solid fuel rocket boosters. Sen. Garn said, Memos always appear after the fact so people can cover their behinds. There are probably memos all over the place that said the Shuttle would fail. To try to create a conspiracy and a coverup is a bunch of bologna. If NASA would have come to Con. gress asking for money in order to redesign the faulty equipment, Congress would have supplied it, Sen. Gam said in reference to NASA supposedly knowing there were flaws in the booster design and not taking time to make the repairs. The press is having a heyday. It bothers me greatly and its making me angry, Gam said. He added all astronauts volunteer for the flights no one is forced to go up. They all know the risks involved and those risks should be logical to anyone. Why do you think people nearest the blastoff are 3V miles away? We would all fly again tomorrow if given the opportunity, Sen. Garn said Sen. Garn, the first senator in space, spoke to the Weber students as part of the convocation series. He said his flight last year aboard Discovery was one of the greatest experiences of his life. Because of his experience, he could relate to the Challenger tragedy. Sen. Gam told students of the importance of the space missions and reiterated the media need to leave NASA alone and let it find its problems and fix them. Sen. Garn said he is looking forward to future space exploration and a manned space station. He feels this is a vital step in our countrys continued exploration in space. The United States had originally planned to send up a space station, but Sen. Gam indicated he didn't know when this would happen. Sen. Garn also stressed that in lethe has received, there is still ters overwhelming support for the space program to continue. Even the families of the seven who died aboard the Challenger favor continued space flights. One thing is for sure, Sen. Garn said, there will be a lot of people holding their breath when NASA sends up the next Canyon Rim Group Elects Officers The Canyon Rim Citizens Association has elected Barbara F. Taxpayer-subsidize- d, the past, some communities found the idea of having their own power system alluring, especially when they were able to latch onto cheap, taxpayer-subsidizehydroelectric power. With that in hand, these cities charged less for electricity than could taxpaying utilities such as Utah Power. In change all that. If President Reagans privatization plan is adopted to help reduce the national budget deficit, federal dams and hydro plants such as Glen Canyon and Flaming Gorge will be auctioned off. And that will mean an end to the cheap power those select few cities have been getting at the expense of others. Theyll end up paying the true cost of the power they use, just like UP&Ls customers do. We support President Reagans goal to cut the deficit in this manner.
