Yet, during that preseason, the Spartans must have learned something. Now, almost halfway into the Region Six season, Murray is threatening South for the league leadership. And, the key to Murrays entire year may have come Friday night when the Spartans captured a victory over old nemesis Judge. The win put Murray in sole possession of second place in Region Six and set up a big game against South Tuesday. No player contributed more to Murray's victory than Tim Black-hawho hit four key free throws in the final seconds of the game to end a gutty comeback attempt by the Bulldogs, who trailed by as many as 12 points in the second half. Judge had rallied behind the play of Grant Jensen and Rick Solvason to move to within with 1:14 left before Blackham hit his free throws. "I was just hoping I could make them." said Blackham, who scored 21 points and was the obvious leader for Murray. "I've had problems with my free throws all week and we shot a lot this week. There's nothing better than beating Judge. They've always been such a powerhouse in basketball " Murray Coach Craig Hammer, who played on the last Murray team which was able to really dominate the Bulldogs in league play, marveled at the improvement he's seen in both Blackham and his team as a whole. 'These kids have had to overcome more adversity than most teams, coach "We had said the first-yea- r that preseason. We finally got a couple of wins under our belt and got some confidence. Tim has come from being an average player to being our leader," continued Hammer. "He's done more than any kid I've seen to improve."
