Show The Sail I ake Tribune. lh Saturday January II A9 Utah premiere for Talking With a 1 138 By Nanc y Mcluh Tribune Staff Writer The production sounded promising 4 f tah premiere of a much heralded theater offering 11 local actresses an intimate theater space, no scenic design and a minimum of props Talking With' Jane Martins monologues on v arcing subjects has potential but in its present state at Theatre 138 leaves much to be desired This is not a plus' in the tradi tional sense of the word but rather 11 little plays moments in people s lives hat have yielded certain results In order for the confessions not to sound as lifeless as a message from an answering machine, the perform ers must be in tune w ith their c hat n ter s torment They must want some thing from us as listeners be it compassion shock distrust empathy laughter, regret, whatever They must talk with lev, not of us Communication was the ingredient missing time and time again as actress after actress stepped front and enter on the dimly lit stage to deliver words about incidents from their character s lives They didn't seem to want anything More often than not they appeared to be reading the lines out loud to themselves There were stories about a woman who escapes into (Jz characters by wearing multi colored scraps of her husband says she s clothing boring - and there were stories about young actresses desperately wanting parts in plays and not knowing how to get them There was a woman about to give birth to a deformed baby and there was a daughter who recalled how her dying mother counted her last days by dropping glass marbles from a bowi All the characters have the ability to draw us to them but few do in this c pruduction There was brief delight in hearing Judy Johnson talk about the satisfaction of turning lights on and turning lights off, and some sympa thy for C'arolynne Record s interpretation of a young girl forced by her father to handle snakes Lynne Van Dam as the woman who was nobody until her face was disfigured by a rapist, and Carmen Jones who spends her final years wishing she could live at Me Donalds, are both quite touching But none of the stories were riveting or made you furget even momentarily that you were in a theater watching actresses line's Director Michael Iicardi said pi or to the opening that more than 7 women auditioned for the 11 roles 1 hat is suielv an indication of the de sire by actresses in this communitv to i participate in their craft Talking W ith w Inch premiered a few seasons bai k at the ctor s Theatre of Louisville is a challenge foi any actress - emotionally tie mate rial is difficult For the stouts to eonte alive the roles must be inter preted bv extremelv strong at tresses, perhaps as the tun continues the pet ni niei s w ill hnd the intcri or makeup of those interesting and troubled characters 1 AKUAIN AH Shoal (t 363 6266 f c "Enemy Mine 00 Tooy 7 Sri Sun 2 00 4 JO 9 15 7 00 rn M..
