Show PROF mm HOGENSON LECTURES TO ON agriculture at the teachers institute held hei here last saturday prof II Il agronomist of the LT U A C was the principal speaker lie he delivered a lecture on he teaching ot of agriculture in the public schools in the course of his remarks the speaker pointed out the great benefit other states were deriving from this line of work in their schools this Is especially true of the corn growing states where tor for a number of years school boys have been be e organized late into corn growing clubs and have contested with each other tn in the study ot of agriculture and I 1 in the scientific growing of corn the speaker stated that a like work 1 is being undertaken to in utah in relation to the growing of 0 potatoes potato agriculture ric ri altur li is one of the studies outlined forthe schools 0 this state but the mere bookish study of 0 this important study in the school room of does n not 0 tah h have lv the It should 0 u t of be with nature study geography and with tho the practical ac of farming As the potato Is a i staple crop for which this state la is well adapted the boys boya of the schools of this state are now being organized into clubs to contest with each other 1 in the scientific growing of potatoes to arouse i keener interest in agriculture the th national copper dank bank of salt lake aty has inaugurated a plan for potato growing contests ts to cover a series of years the prize consists of a trophy cup and a cash prize of on the cup will be engraved each year the name of the winner his address the variety of potato raised and the yield per acre the cup thus engraved will be exhibited in various towns throughout the state and at fairs and expositions both within and outside the state any boy under 18 is eligible to enter the contest whether he is attending school or not and he may grow his potatoes anywhere la in his county tut bat he must do the work of planting cultivating and harvesting himself the contestant must raise pot len than onea half acre or i pow of a single ongle variety in awarding the prize fifty points will be given for yield an and d the other fifty points tor for shape size smoothness of skin cooking qualities etc blanks for the boys to sign containing rules of contest and instructions ar a resent sent out byice by the national copper bank clubs of ten or a dozen boys are being organized in each community these are organized into federal county clubs to these county clubs lecturers will be sent to instruct the boys A bulletin is in print at the A C U now on potato culture that will be distributed free to the contesting boys the speaker urged that school gardening either in the individual or community plan be also undertaken in the schools seeds for which may be gotten from the department of agriculture at washington at the principals meeting an I 1 informal n discussion of the above subject was as held and it was decided to give the boys of this county a chance at the contest potato growing clubs I 1 will be organized and all be boys Ys under eighteen who are interested and who can get the support of their pa parents r ants may enter |
