Show w The Salt Lake Tribune Plan next year’s garden By Genevieve H Folsom Tribune Garden Editor The garden is beautiful in late summer when colorful annuals are at their best early chrysanthemums have started to flower and exotic dahlias are at their peak It is fun to eat your meals outdoors in this beauty This is especially true if your garden is lighted for night enjoyment Try placing a spotlight on a colorful bed of annuals or set it so it shows off a favorite tree Pool lights add loveliness and of course you will want lights to illuminate the garden stairs Some colorful lanterns on the patio will brighten it for your pleasure or for special occasions It is not difficult to maintain your garden now if you have kept the weeds down watered properly and set the mower high when you mowed the lawn A mulch around flower beds will help the weeds and will conserve moisture As you enjoy your garden you should look at ways to improve it for next year Perhaps you will want a new patio and fall is a good time to put this in Probably you will want to change your color scheme This is Eating artichokes - ArtiDES MOINES Iowa (AP) chokes are a favorite summer food but many people aren’t sure how to eat this leafy vegetable Better Homes and Gardens says the art of eating an artichoke is in your fingers Once it has been steamed boiled or microwaved just pull off a leaf dunk it into butter or sauce and pull the leaf between your teeth Eat just the tender part of the leaf and discard the rest center is the choke a fuzzy substance Don’t eat that or the center leaves Scrape them off and you’ve reached the heart The best way to eat the heart is to cut it into bite-siz- e pieces and dip it into butter At the thistle-lik- e LOSE Genevieve Folsom easy to do by working out color schemes on paper Annuals add much to the color of the garden so take them into consideration when planning for next year They will have to wait until spring for planting but you can plan for your selections Try some of the new varieties but keep to the ones that you grow well too Many other plants can be placed in the garden in the fall like perennials trees shrubs and ground covers If you have some areas in your garden try ground covers They will do well planted under trees in a sunny dry spot on a hillside in a shady location where nothing seems to grow or even a moist situation around a pool Nothing seems so lovely around a pool as Creeping Jenny with its shiny rounded evergreen foliage and lovely golden buttercuplike blooms If you decide to plant remember to check with your nurseryman as to what the growing requirements are of each plant you select Don’t plant a g plant in a shady spot or one that likes moisture on a dry sunny hillside The same care also should be taken when you decide to put in a new shrub or tree Check how much space you have for a tree Then ask your nurseryman how tall and wide it will be at maturity then allow enough room for it to grow Shrubs and trees in most cases do very well with fall planting for this gives them a longer period of time to become established before hot summer comes Most trees and shrubs are planted in containers at your hard-to-pla- sun-lovin- 50 Pounds to nt nurseryman's ready to be planted any time during the growing season Simply have the nurseryman cut the can open water the plant well the day before planting dig the planting hole deep and wide enough to take the roots with the soil adhering Remove the plant from the container set in the hole and fill in with topsoil Water well when the hole is three-fourtfilled let it drain out and fill up to the surface with soil You might leave a depression around the tree to conserve moisture If the tree requires staking do it at planting time Water and up until the ground freezes this applies to all the garden If you select carefully you can obtain flowering trees and shrubs that will bring beauty to the garden for a long time Your nurseryman can tell you the flowering period Dwarf fruit trees are excellent for the small garden They bring flowers in the spring shade in the summer and a harvest of ' delicious fruit in the fall As we mentioned you should find out the height blooming period and color of all the flowers you plant The tall ones can be utilized at the back of the border the mediums to the center and the dwarf types in the front In a recent column we gave you selections for the new 1988 Here are some other recent introductions that you might want to try Last year Basil Purple Ruffles was a winner and is an annual ornamental herb with glossy serrated purple leaves and a nice aromatic fragrance It will add a striking contrast in the flower beds A yellow zinnia was a 1985 winner It was called Yellow Marvel and produces bold yellow flowers all season It’s easy to grow from seed Candlelight ornamental pepper is an interesting plant introduced in 1983 It is a light green pepper which turns to orange and red It is heat-an- d Gazania Mini Tana is nice gazania orange gerine Your nurseryman will have many ideas for new plants in your garden for next year All 8 1987 September Tuesday INTOM Petite La MINI BLINDS (One week delivery) Lifetime Warranty 70 colors to choose from ourca pen Youa KinlGlnda Shutters v On Wood WIKISH ffiffigcs m That’s right!
