Show Lifestyle alt §altf ffibune Tuesday Morning— September 8 Section Page 9 A 1987 ABC news woman to keynote Ogden confab By Judy Magid Tribune Lifestyle Writer Ann Compton remembers the yellow dress she wore the first time she filled the 11 pm anchor spot at a Roanoke Va television station almost 18 years ago She doesn’t remember much else about that night “Our 11 pm anchorman ran away with a Delta Airlines stewardess I was five weeks into my first job and asked if I could take the spot It’s a small market and the boss said ‘Why not?’ ” Ms Compton recalled in a recent telephone interview American Broadcasting Co’s congressional correspondent she will be in Ogden Sept 11 to address the Third Annual Conference of the National Association of Women in Chambers of Commerce at 1 pm Ogden Hilton Hotel The conference which runs from Sept 10 through 12 is sponsored by the Ogden Area Chamber of Commerce Ms Compton is married to Dr William Hughes Washington DC gastroenterologist The Hugheses were married after Ms Compton joined ABC as a network correspondent They are the parents of four children 7 6 4 and almost 23 months “My husband doesn’t talk a feminist line he just lives it” Ms Compton chuckled “He laughs and says ‘I won’t answer to Mr Compton but I will answer to Dr Compton’ Socially I am Ann Hughes I think it’s important for the children to have the same last name as their mother” Ms Compton believes good fortune has played a large part in her career “I was graduated from Hollins College a small women’s school Roanoke It was a different experience from growing up on the North Shore of Chicago I had a good liberal arts education but no professional goals I was not a top student and had no particular interest in graduate school There were no journalism classes “I did a project for the local TV station during my senior year The ‘big’ boss called and said ‘We’d like to offer you a job at $100 a week’ At that moment I discovered where my interests were I had a job” she said She took two weeks off after graduating and then went to work From Roanoke she moved to Richmond as a political correspondent for the station “Four years later I received a call from ABC saying they would like to talk to me about a correspondent’s job I said I was in the middle of a Virginia State Legislative session and was busy until March” she remembered “When I hung up I thought ‘What have you done?’ “But when I called them in March they were still interested” She joined the network that fall A month before her 27th birthday she walked up the White House driveway as the first woman named to be e White House correspondent by a network news organization and one of the youngest to receive such an assignment “President Nixon had just resigned The network needed an extra body youn energetic and willing to work the terrible long hours it would take to cover Gerald Ford’s administration Whereas Richard Nixon had been remote and removed Gerald Ford took his show on the road “My husband and I agreed from the beginning that we would never time the birth of our children because of office commitments or taxes or an election year There is no ‘perfect time’ to have children so you have them and everything else falls into place” she continued The Hughes children “fell into” some interesting places in history “Bill was born between the Iowa caucuses and the New Hampshire primary in 1980 Teddy now 6 was bom after the assassination attempt on President Reagan’s life Annie who is 4 was born right after Sam Donaldson’s wedding reception I remember lying in my hospital bed and watching the coverage of the destruc “After attending a high school with 5200 students and 1200 in my graduating class I loved the change to a small women's college with lots of emphasis on academics “I think a women’s college provides leadership grooming that women don’t get in a large university where they must compete with men “The school president has to be a woman the president of the religious chapter has to be a woman You’re competing on credentials not clouded by whether you are male or female I don’t even think I appreciated it fully until after I was graduated” Ms Compton joins the Hollins College board of trustees next month Ms Compton admitted there is real and tangible management prejudice against women in her field “I have mixed emotions about Christine Craft’s sex bias and fraud suit Ms Craft was a newswoman who said she was demoted from her job in Kansas City after being told she was ‘Too old too unattractive and not deferential enough to men’” Ms Compton said "Most prejudice is so subtle it’s almost impossible to prove but my face hair and what I choose to wear today are right there and visible But no one has ever offered me a ‘makeover’ or a wardrobe or coaching or plastic surgery That’s true for most women I know at the networks “The prejudice of good looks is there for men too but without nearly the same degree A man who is too classically handsome is thought to full-tim- lose tion of the American embassy in Beirut In the middle of such crisis Pres- ident Reagan called to congratulate me on Annie’s birth He’s a nice human being “And the baby Michael was born during Gramm-Rudma- n legislation” A member of the board of trustees of the Washington Journalism Center and on the Advisory Board of the Gannett Center for Media Studies Columbia University New York City as well as incoming chairman of the Radio Television Correspondents Association Ms Compton is often asked to speak “The number one question I’m asked from women’s groups men’s herself a “staircase wit — I think of something witty to say as I go upstairs for the night” she remains d and happy with her work her family and her life “I’ve got everything except time I’m short on sleep and short on personal time With four young children and a new golden retriever puppy going out of the house to a party without a smudge on my skirt or a wrinkle is only a dream I guess I would like time to sit and read or watch television” she said The Hughes family has a Utah connection she added The new puppy Raider of the Lost Bark is the offspring of a dog belonging to Ambassador of the
