A Jj-- Me j' t ‘hA Yes it’s true I have diseased feet But it could have been worse Last month in the early heat of summer I suddenly developed itchy toes a sign of athlete's foot a disease caused by the length of the professional basketball playoffs I hope athletes are proud of themselves that they have a disease named after them a disease that justly afflicts people in other professions It’s enough sitting here banging away on this keyboard to make me wish I could give athletes a dose of newspaperman fingers I don’t know where I picked up athlete’s foot probably in one of those cheap motels we stayed in on vacation one of those motels where they don’t screen the customers where they let athletes and anybody else stay overnight athletes who foul the showers with their big itchy feet I remember the public swimming pools of my youth where you had to walk through a tray of some sort of milky fungicide on your way into the dressing room And they had a big lifeguard standing there to make sure you did so He had known the heartbreak of athlete’s foot personally and he wasn’t going to let it spread any further So we all had to wade through that weird smelling white stuff iTV vvA $ s t i fti 8 y WOMEN CONFRONT TOUGH ISSUES 3 ' if At: r AAV- - Why can’t they be more discreet? Why would any company whose president is sane expect people to walk blithely into a store and pick up a can that advertises a condition that is not likely to make you popular among fellow supermarket customers? Never mind that I don’t have jock itch In most stores I still have to buy a can of stuff that signals to the world that I may have jock itch I have to live in this community My picture is in the paper over these yarns There is little anonymity around here for me So I have three choices: I can put a sack over my head and go into a public store and buy foot medicine labeled “jock itch” can hide out in the car and send the missus to buy a can labeled “jock itch” which is going to confuse a lot of people because the missus is a woman I can bravely grab a can of the stuff and go through the check stand The third course is the worst If you do no more than go through the line and slam a can of powder on the counter advertising to the world that you have athlete’s foot people tend to move back a step or two But if that can contains the lying label “JOCK ITCH!” people will take one look and move to another line If it went no further than that I wouldn't mind so much I wouldn’t mind if all that happened was that eight or 10 unreasonably squeamish people jumped to a false conclusion and moved to another line My reputation can survive what eight or 10 hypochondriacs think But you know what’s going to happen if I pick up one of those cans and go through the check stand The price will be missing And before I can stop her the clerk will get on the PA system and call out "Price check on jock itch powder for Bill Hall” And people will go running out of the store trying to get away before I get near them and want to shake hands or something Fortunately I finally found one brand that says that it is for athlete’s foot no mention of jock itch So I have managed to quell the itch and the ailment But I have learned something I have learned that you buy the same patent medicine whether you have athlete’s foot or jock itch I have also learned to keep my feet out of my lap I Bill Hall is a columnist and editorial page writer for the Lewiston Morning Tribune Idaho a Salt Lake Tribune group newspaper |
