Show The SaIUake Tribune Saturday March 28 17 A13 Valentino Ungaro represent two sides of fashion coin By Kmght-Ridde- r PAFUS - Jill Gerston Newpdpers The fall ready-to-wea- r collections of Valentino and Emanuel L'ngaro represent two sides of the same luxurious feminine fashion coin one sleek and tailored the other soft and pouffy Both designers’ creations demand scrupulous attention to accessories — ridiculously high heels sheer black stockings elaborate hats extravagant jewelry The women who wear these clothes are too rich and too thin and too devoted to their pet designers to ever question whether the clothes are a trifle silly and overdone Comfort and practicality are not the issues here looking rich elegant and chicly sexy is Valentino achieves all of the above with clothes that are so short and snug they look like they were wallpapered to the models’ thighs Yet there is nothing vulgar or cheap about them The fabrics are luxurious the tailoring is impeccable and the total impression is nothing short of elegant There are hardly any trousers in the show and few of the styles can be called casual For day there are lush fur trims on cpats and jackets short tight leather skirts with a frill at the hem and wide leather corselet belts that are and just the thing for lettuce-lea- f champagne lunches Valentino is partial to skirts that are either pencil-slior full like a little girl’s party dress Both are about four inches above the knee and worn with Eiffel Tower heels The models got into the mood by head-to-to- e swiveling their hips provocatively as they strutted down the runway It was a bit disconcerting to see Vogue beauties swathed in cashmere and tweed and walking like Lido showgirls But the photographers loved it and whistled and cheered in appreciation Valentino's evening scere is filled with black velvet dresses touched with ruffles or with mother-of-pear- l embroidery The prettiest dress — and one that is sure to be widely copied — is a black velvet simple sheath with a pink satin ribbon braided down one sleeve and finished in a bow If Valentino follows the sleek tailored path Ungaro veers in the opposite direction with clothes that are at once very tight and outrageously pouffy It is the worst of both possible worlds whip-pet-th- in long-sleeve- The core of Ungaro's day look is a tiny jacket that is all collar and sleeves sleeves Deep balloon-shapesprout from the shoulders and a huge cape collar is draped over the head like a monk’s hood The jacket is paired with tight miniskirts in colored metallic leathd er The play of proportion between lit- tle blouson jackets and tight slivers of skirts is totally wrong making the models look like Thanksgiving Day parade blimps bobbing down the runway More successful are Ungaro’s long fitted jackets that flare over ankle-lengt- h pleated skirts Instead of his usual mix of riotous colors and clashing patterns the de — signer preferred deep jewel tones — and emerald especially amethyst and subdued tapestry florals Evening styles are lavish and exaggerated combining black velvet rainbow-coloresatin or bands of bustles and taffeta ruffles Some of the creations are unintentionally funny like bubble skirts so round they look like they were inflated with helium and tulle stoles that are wrapped around the models and tied with a giant bow at the neck "Oh goody! The clothes come with gift wrapping" commented an American fashion editor However the finale was an improvement with a parade of long simple velvet gowns that look regal and elegant While Valentino and Ungaro concentrate on gala evening clothes the House of Hermes specializes in chic classic sportswear that has become the uniform of the rich preppy from Philadelphia to Tokyo Instead of the usual British fashions the day clothes are more stylish and are touched with such Parisian accents as huge fur collars quilted trim plaids and short leather skirts d hunt-countr- y The colorful Hermes anniversary scarf commemorating the House’s 150th anniversary turns up in blouses dresses and even the lining of big fur stoles But its prettiest incarnation is in the short full skirts attached to black velvet bodices that were shown in the finale where models held aloft candles as “Happy Birthday” played in the background It takes work a little imagination DEAR HELOISE: I recently went to a party and I wanted to write and tell you the way my friend had her table set It was absolutely She received numerous comments on it all night Here is the way she did it She covered the table with two different cloths She then caught the ends of the top one in a big bright bow One of the ck ths she used was a solid and the other was a contrasting one it was just great You really should try it — W P Thanks for writing in and congratulations to the great hostess! All it takes is a little work and some imagination and not much money Beautiful" — Heloise DEAR HELOISE: In one of your columns a lady wrote that she used cuphooks in her closet to hang chains and necklaces on I have another idea This doesn’t call for all the holes to be drilled in the walls either I bought one of those tie racks They are about a foot long and hold about 20 ties It only has two places for screws A lot of chains can be hung up without the worry of tangling I have mine on the wall across from the dresser Carol Wheeler DEAR HELOISE: I found the per— there is really nothing to it Don’t query dreary diet books — if it tastes good don’t eat it! — Stella McVey fect diet I laughed at your advice but then I thought “that used to be so but now I LOVE brussels sprouts squash and carrots and I used to think they tasted YUCK-O!- " Heloise - UPlReuter Photo Italian designer Emanuel Ungaro showed hooded blouson in flan- - broad-shouldere- d nel with short metallic skirt as choice for winter in the fashion showings in Paris HAPPY 72ND WEDDING ANNIVERSARY MR AND MRS WILLIAM S HUNTER Mr ond Mrs WHHom S Hunter of Sondv former re $1 dents of K emmerer Wyoming ond long hme residents of Wyoming Wedding their 7?nd Annlver sory Morch V They were married In Kem merer Wyoming March 27 191 J tr The ceremony wai Tp conducted In a ‘I home that wos the orlglnol residence of J C Penney ’’ They resided In p" - iij f ffia first 0 years of mar- rfed life moving to W'tyflarlt flfjL Soft Lode City m 1975 Their sons ond their families Including five grandheioed them to celchildren and 14 ebrate the hapov occasion Wyoming U jLu NEW HAIR BREAKTHROUGH - Save 50 and more Sat Mon & Tues only!
