Material’s underfoot to set table By Nancy Hobbs Tribune Lifestyle Writer Whether setting a table for a dinner party or for an everyday family meal an interesting creative look is important to complement the enjoyment of the company according to Peri Wolfman a "tabletop designer” and owner of two New York tableware stores WolfmanGold & Good Company The ingredients need not be expensive and often can be found around the home much to the host's surprise Some favorite suggestions for ingenious tablewares fall into the category of “using things for other than what they were meant" Ms Wolfman said As examples she suggested different occasions might lend themselves to the use of simple bracelets as napkin rings washcloths as napkins or a French Marseilles bedspread as a large tablecloth Those are a few of the ideas Ms Wolfman presents as the author of "The Perfect Setting" a book illustrated with photographs by her husband tabletop photographer Charles Gold She also collaborated with the makers of Sunlight dishwashing products m producing a free booklet of ideas Promotion of the booklet was the reason for Ms Wolfman's visit to Salt Lake City last week Ms Wolfman a graduate of Parsons School of Design who decided the "brutal” fashion industry was not to her liking became involved in table setting as a way to combine design creativity with the pleasure she finds in homemaking Her ideas about table setting are based on etiquette basics — knowing the correct placement of utensils glasses and dishes She employs that knowledge with the saying "Know the rules to break them" resulting in some appealing decorating ideas A table setting should first reflect the individuality of the household Ms Wolfman said Often the most cre full-col- table-settin- was In Salt Lake to show ease of setting an attractive table g Table settings may look complicated until separate elements are defined Asparagus around candle is simple centerpiece ative way sometimes unbeknownst to the host is underfoot In setting up the photographs for her book Ms Wolfman asked friends to participate by using what they had m their homes to design a creative table setting Most often the friends opened their cupboards to Ms Wolfman and let her do the designing They were amused and often startled by her compositions Ms Wolfman said with a laugh Collections are a good place to looking for ideas In one home Ms Wolfman used a large pig figurine from elsewhere in the couple's home as the centerpiece for a festive Easter setting Several turines from another collection waddled down the center of a large rectangular table A personal favorite Ms Wolfman said was the idea of her friends who used their colorful collection of fiesta start duck-toppe- d ware accented with the use of equal ly colorful washcloths as napkins "Then they put their Baroque sterling silver on top of the washcloths It was a wonderful use of contrasts" Napkins are one of the strongest elements in a table setting in Ms Wolfman's opinion They make or break a setting's mood — the latter happening whenever paper napkins are used she said "Why should you cheat yourself and use paper napkins? When you use cloth you treat yourself to a little feeling of luxury" The complaint that napkins must be ironed to make them presentable doesn’t go far with Ms Wolfman Her response is that cloth napkins need not be perfectly ironed if they’re in napkins rings and the rings can be the basis for a wide variety of creative ideas She has used bandanas as napkins when the setting is a picnic barbecue or other informal event Simply tying a knot in the center gives a casual but deliberate look "I think the way you change the look of a table most is by changing the napkins" As Ms Wolfman leafed through her book to show examples of different settings she admitted that often peoples' first reaction is that the settings are more expensive and take more effort than they really do A closer look at individual elements composing the total effect makes her point surprisingly clear Starting with the basics — usually the china or other dishes — and concentrating on consistency — color or theme — are the keys to attractive table settings Ms Wolfman pointed out Apples partially cored to serve as candle holders fresh fruits and nuts arranged on fresh leaves as a center-piecor picture frames as place cards are a few "do able" ideas that make table setting rewarding To obtain a free copy of the booklet “A Guide to Perfect Table Settings" write to Sunlight PO Box 4051 Grand Central Station New d e York New Mexico is always has been part of the US i Dear Ann Landers I have followed with interest the letters from residents of NcWj Mexico who are resentful that so many Americans don't ' know New Mexico is a part of the United States Here is a map I purchased recently that has omitted New Mexico entirely Also a piece from Vie Wall Street Journal by ' Eugene Carlson a staff reporter It appeared Nov 17 1986 Enjoy! — A Loyal Fan Dear Loyal: Sorry I can't print the map but here's Carlson's piece See the Map See the US : See New Mexico No New Mexico A proud member of the Union since 1912 New Mexico's name nonetheless sounds vaguely alien This leads to problems Residents tell of publicaovertions that demand seas rates for New Mexico subscribers and of letters that arrive from elsewhere in the United States with enough overseas postage to assure delivery to Buenos Aires Then there was the young man from New Mexico who applied to high-price- d Customers Save Thousands Million Dollar Liquidation Harvard Business School Back came the school’s reply: Since you are an “international candidate" you must first take a test proving your proficiency in English A Texas woman talking to a New Mexico county courthouse telephone operator inquires: "If it’s Friday in Texas will it be Friday in New Mexico?"
