Show The Salt Lake Tribune M5 23 1987 Friday January Morning seminar today features actors on acting Continued From Page mance "The only reason I was able to even do it was that I had this instinct an inner voice saying This is right this is right’ But on a more rational level I was very fearful I kept asking myself ‘What am I doing?’ But instinct won out as it often does" Hunt has been following acting instincts most of her life She decided on her profession when she was very young and started studying to be an actress at the age of 12 Raised in Westport Conn she often went to theater in New York and frequented the Westport Country Playhouse a summer stock theater near her home "If there is one moment that I decided to become an actress it was when I went to see Mary Martin in ‘Peter Pan’ in the '50s I had never seen anything like it — a completely enchanting production of a completely enchanting play” M-- 3 Not only is Linda Hunt in Park City to participate in the acting seminar but she also has a film in the independent dramatic competition The film is "Waiting for the Moon” and its two main characters are author Gertrude Stein and her companion of 40 years Alice B Toklas The film centers on a fictional inci- dent in 1936 that tests Stein and Toklas' relationship In the process a portrait of their life together emerges a portrait that includes their friendships with such people as Pablo Picasso Ernest Hemingway and French poet Apollinaire Linda Hunt Stella As Director Jill Godmilow and Film briefs: ‘Star Trek’ real winner - Who says (IT!) e picture sequels never up to the original film? industry's ‘ first feature film To celebrate the occasion properly Disney will re release "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs" simultaneously in more than 60 countries includ- ing the Soviet Union and China Thirty one countries have submitted entries to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences for consideration for best foreign language film of the year The entries represent the second largest number of foreign films submitted for Oscar consideration since the award was established in 1956 screenwriter Mark Magill first approached Hunt about playing Gertrude Stein Hunt however was more intrigued with Alice B Toklas’ character “Alice was a person who was defined by another person" said Hunt "She was defined by Gertrude That’s what often happens in couples There’s someone who at least publicly seems to lead And someone who seems to be in the shadows I have so often played characters who exist in a solitary way who are very singular and who are defined by themselves Gertrude seemed to me to be very solitary Alice seemed to be something else and a departure for me" After researching her role and coming to an understanding of Alice Hunt believes the public perception of Stein and Toklas did not reflect the reality of their relationship "On a personal level — a level hidden from the world — Alice was the one who drove the relationship who made it work kept it in balance That isn't the role of a secondary person at all “I think the film has something to say about love and humor and balance in a relationship” continued Hunt "It's also a film about people who made up their own rules — they are at the top of the list of great couples who did it their way who created their own lives out of whole cloth living in a way that didn't have anything to do with what other people had done before them” While the two films are as different as two films can be Hunt compares the experience of first reading the screenplay of “W'aiting for the Moon" with her initial reading of Lawrence Kasdan's "Silverado" in which she played Stella the hostess of the Midnight Star Saloon Stella was written especially for Hunt “I remember getting Larry’s script for ‘Silverado’ and it was all there When I read Mark’s screenplay for ‘Waiting for the Moon' I had never read anything like it before It was not only complete unto itself it used a theatricality and imagination that I'd never really seen in a screenplay before It charmed me and was similar to what I had thought the private domestic side of Alice and Gertrude might have been like” Hunt astounded film audiences in 1983 when in “The Year of Living Dangerously" she disappeared so completely into the role of Billy K wan that few realized the character was played by a woman until the closing credits rolled It was a risky easting decision by director Peter Weir one that paid off with an Acade- Christine Lahti is known for creating strong independent characters In “Just Between Friends" she played Sandy Dunlap an ambitious television reporter who strikes up a poignant and sometimes painful friendship with a homemaker played by Mary Tyler Moore In "Swing Shift" she was the outgoing Hazel Zanussi who befriends a more uncertain woman played by Goldie Hawn when both find themselves working in an airplane factory during World Hunt about a dream" The dream however involves the character abandoning her different characters “The primary thing I look for is a good character” she said about choosing projects “The second thing I look for is a good script But it's the character I look for first and playing a variety of characters is very important to me” She got the chance to play a woman different from her previous roles in "Season of Dreams” (formerly called "Stacking”) which is in the festival's independent dramatic competition Set in a rural Montana town in 1955 "Season of Dreams” is about how a crisis affects the members of a ranching family Lahti describes it as a coming-of-agstory Also to pursue film acting "I was a hippy then and it wasn't cool to be ambitious” she recalled with amusement “I saw Richard Dreyfuss in ‘The Apprenticeship of Duddy Kravitz' and immediately decided to leave school I went to New York and began to study acting” Seven years later Lahti found herself appearing in “Whose Life Is It Anyway?" with Dreyfuss Dreyfuss played the paralyzed sculptor who wanted to exercise his right 4o die Lahti played Dr Taylor who tfied to " convince him otherwise Lahti told Dreyfuss of the effect "Duddy KravUz” had had on her life "He just looked at me and said 'Tell me Gilmore's cousin Brenda Nicole She has fond memories of making the television movie "It was intense and haunting and at the same time fascinating 1 had the the opportunity to meet the real Brenda who was very helpful and generous" She also has participated in the filmmaking laboratory at Robert Bedford's Sundance Institute and appeared in another television movie "Single Bars Single Women” filmed in Provo Lahti attributes her interest in acting to the fact that she was from a large family and “performing" was a winner of last year's dramatic competition “My character is very submissive and passive" said Lahti about "Season of Dreams” “She’s a small town housewife and greasy spoon waitress who has been repressed her whole life and now has an opportunity to act on War II "Both of those films dealt with female friendship a subject very close to my heart and important to me” said Lahti "I felt I had a lot to say about the subject They were very different characters The thing they had in common was that neither had a current man in her life but each did have a platonic friendship with a woman There seems to be a lot of ‘buddy’ movies about men but very few about women I'm just thankful that those two came along” At the same time Lahti is an actress who relishes the challenge of $199" Compiata Pacfcaga Prica in box six-ho- seminar exploring the possibilities for decorating
