Army Pvt Keith B Stone son of Joann and Kent B Palmer West Val-leCity has arrived for duty with the 7th Infantry West Germany Pvt Stone a petroleum supply specialist is a 1986 graduate of Granger High y School Staff and Teacher Help South High’s Newspaper Make Comeback "It's the second year we’ve pushed a strong journalism staff” said Miss Herman ‘‘We’re trying to get the ball rolling again and develop the skills necessary to build a solid paper with strong emphasis in the areas of writing and photography" By Scott Rivers Tribune Staff Writer The Scribe South High School's newspaper is making a comeback after a few years of obscurity — with an increased staff and readership When teacher Mary Herman took over the journalism program in 1984 there were five students involved as the newspaper was in its redevelopment stage There are currently 20 students involved with The Scribe being printed six times yearly bers from the Daily Utah Chronicle the University of Utah’s student newspaper The Scribe staff is allowed a free rein in developing their writing skills Miss Harman has encouraged students to focus on school events related to sports features and entertainment To further these skills the South High journalism class has attended workshops at Westminster College and Brigham Young University the students have also received addition- “The program’s drawing point is that students are given a certain creative freedom in which to work For many students journalism is some al pointers from visiting staff mem thing new and challenging there’s still more to learn” stories on teen-ag- e suicides and runaways in addition to controversial and Junior Joanne Contreras advertising manager is among the staff members who have witnessed the increase and growth of The Scribe during the past year "In past months the paper has improved in terms of writing layout and content" said Miss Contreras “The stories we have now are well balanced in terms of features and news articles The paper has covered editorials” “We’ve had increased readership and positive feedback from students Next year’s plans include expanding the pages and increasing advertising Since most of the staff will be in their senior year we want to go out in style” she added According to Miss Harman The Scribe should see increased publication in the months ahead Though de termined by the school budget and advertising the staff is hoping to print an issue each month The journalism instructor mentioned there is greater interest in the newspaper among students and fac ulty especially since the staff has in creased three-fol- d during the past year Overall Miss Harman feels the results are most encouraging “We're maintaining a steady pace at this time It's nice to know more people from South High read the paper and become involved” Bountiful Gives Preliminary Approval to Annex County Land Special To The Tribune BOUNTIFUL The Bountiful City Council has given preliminary approval to annex a piece of land currently part of unincorporated Davis County During a recent public hearing council members ' Unanimously ap- -
