The last thing high school sports coaches should want to do is to imitate their college counterparts in trying to recruit top quality players Recruiting scandal after recruiting scandal has rocked many a university in recent years as coaches have done their best to entice 17- - and kids into their programs The process does little for the dignity of the coaches or the colleges Do high school coaches want to put themselves in the position of having to recruit into their program in order to succeed9 One would hope that the answer to that question would be a resounding straight home games and compiling a 22-record says he was not aware of Bradley being recruited by any larger schools He says the Emery star may have been approached by some institutions "There was great care taken by PREP RANKINGS fine athletic skills into their programs In the cases of Skyline and Jordan to name one would be one athlete who has transferred into those institutions who has had an immediate impact Cottonwood has been helped by a couple of basketball players who have come from other schools to play in recent years but those appear to have been covered by the transfer rule They were such players that it is difficult to believe the transfers would have taken place if they hard-presse- d y est scoring team obtained former 53- goal scorer Bobby Carpenter from the Los Angeles Kings on Monday for de fensive forward Steve Kasper The trade of the two centers com- the’ pleted a deal begun Sunday when Bruins sent Jay Miller a highly physical player to the Kings It L limed at giving the Bruins more scoring punch and the Kings who lead the league in goals a check- er like Kasper and an enforcer like Miller Boston which lost to Edmonton in the Stanley Cup finals last season was in its first 15 games this season since then and has But it is scored just 163 goals in 49 games ' “Desperate times sometimes desperate measures" Bruins General Manager Harry Sinden said Carpenter who hasn't come close to the 53 goals he scored for Washinghas a bruised thumb ton in 1984-8Sinden said The injury also has been reported as a cracked right wrist Kasper 27 is in his ninth NHL season all with Boston and won the Selke Trophy as the league's top defensive forward in 1982 Kasper is coming off his best offensive season with 26 goals and 44 assists for 70 points He has 10 goals and 16 assists in 49 games this season and 135 goals and 220 assists in 564 NHL games Carpenter the third choice n the 1981 NHL draft had 32 goals in each of his first two seasons 28 in his third season and 53 in his fourth But he totaled just 55 goals in his last three seasons with Washington the New York Rangers and Los Angeles He has 11 goals and 15 assists in 39 games this season 2-- school principals" said Nelson "Shawn was friendly with the Ken Roberts and the Tebbs kids at Bingham and with University of Utah coach Lynn Archibald's kid at Bountiful through the AAU program “When he wanted to visit his friends at Bingham the Bingham principal would not even let him go inside the school I wasn t aware of anything illegal taking place “The worst rumors we heard came from the ranks where a couple of people guaranteed a championship if he would switch schools But we never heard of anything taking place from one of the larger schools along the Wasatch Front " Beere thinks the problem may be more acute among parents and boosters of schools than it is among coaches “I don't think there is any recruiting going on between high schools per se" he said “But there may be recruiting going on within the community We don’t have any rules which can restrict recruiting from the community standpoint And that may happen but there is nothing we can do about it" Ultimately the responsibility for the problem rests on the shoulders of ambitious parents who for one reason or another may think their son or daughter may get a better chance at recognition and possible college scholarship offers by playing at a dife ferent school for a coach From a competitive standpoint it wouldn't appear that recruiting is not paying many dividends Of players who have been rumored to be “recruits" I can t think of one who has led his school to a state title As for those coaches who feel there are recruiting violations taking place it is time for them to step forward with specific information The mechanism is in place to take strong action against those coaches who are recruiting All that is needed is for someone to offer positive proof Realignment Problem Sohed: After much antagonism and discussion administrators from Jordan Granite and Salt Lake districts have wisely concept scrapped the for Regions Two and Three and adopted two new regions for the 1989-9school year Region Two will consist of East 2-- “No'" If asked most Utah prep coaches will deny ever being personally involved in recruiting a prospect But more than a few say that some of their peers have proselyted prospective athletes Glen Beere the executive director of the Utah High School Activities As- sociation has heard the rumors as well He stresses that his organization’s bylaws prohibit recruiting A coach or school who is found recruiting can receive an official letter or reprimand can be restricted from participation in district or state-leve- l activity can be suspended from the UHSAA can have its coach or principal be fined up to $200 or a combination of all those punishments No Utah coach or school has ever been caught recruiting “We make those investigating the charge put it into writing" said Beere “Principals are required by our constitution to report indications of recruiting Some are investigated But it is a difficult charge to prove " Some of the most suspect schools of course are the state's few private institutions Others are schools like Skyline Cottonwood and Jordan which have open enrollment policies and are allowed to admit students from other parts of the valley This is permitted because some schools are overcrowded while those in question have facilities which are underutilized A few other coaches have even been suspected of bringing in foreign exchange students with BOSTON (AP) — The struggling Boston Bruins the NHL’s sixth low- 2 hadn’t been entirely above board In the case of the private schools there isn't one school among them that seems to recruit players actively If that were the case the private institution would be dominating sports competition No private school is doing that The UHSAA adopted a new transfer policy a year ago which has more than a few coaches concerned about the recruiting of junior high and sophomore athletes by their peers The new policy says that a student who transfers from one school to another without the move of his parents or of the person he or she has lived with during the last 12 months is eligible for every team at a new1 school expect for varsity This provision also applies to foreign exchange students After a year at the school the athlete would be eligible to play varsity Thus there would be an advantage for a freshman or sophomore athlete to switch schools but no advantage for a junior One obvious target of high school basketball coaches under this transfer rule would have been Shawn Bradley Emery's junior center who could have elected to change schools this year and move to a larger institution where he could have played in a more competitive program his senior year coach James Nelson His 1987-8who was fired by his local school board a year ago despite winning 30 8 high-profil- three-divisio- n 0 Highland Cottonwood Skyline Olympus and Brighton Region Three will consist of Bingham West Jordan Cyprus Granger Taylorsville Kearns Hillcrest and the new Hunter High in 1990 Looking at the leagues from the standpoint of geography and the existence of natural rivalries the administrators who adopted this new league deserve the praise of the public for creating two excellent regions with fine competitive balance Lenny Wilkens g Wilkens to Coach East Lenny Wilkens of the Cleveland Cavaliers has clinched the distinction of becoming only the second man to coach both the East and West teams in r Game the league said Monday the NBA This time Wilkens will be coaching the East team when the play on Feb 12 at the Astrodome in Houston The last two times in 1979 and 1980 with Seattle he coached the West The job goes to the coach whose team has the best record in each conference through games of Sunday Jan 29 At 29-- going into Monday night's game against Golden State the Cavs had that honor clinched in the East The West coaching honor still is undecided with Pat Riley of the Los Angeles Lakers Cotton Fitzsimmons of Phoenix and Bernie Bickerstaff of Seattle in contention All-Sta- All-Sta- 7 re Dudley Wins WAC Honor 5 Air Force junior Raymond Dudley who averaged nearly 26 points per game in three contests last week was named the Western Athletic Conference player of the week Monday Dudley a junior and the WAC's leading scorer scored 22 points against Colorado State 36 against Brigham Young and 19 against Wyoming In the Wyoming game the only one of the three that Air Force won he hit 15 free throws in a row Stipo Out for Year Indiana Pacers center Steve Stipanovich who has yet to play this season because of an injured knee probably will miss the rest of the season the team physician said Dr Robert Breuckmann said Stipanovich has not shown significant recovery since surgery Nov 18 “Since this is about halfway through the season and he's still having pain he'll probably be out" Breckmann said Sunday "The closer you get to midseason the less likely it is he'll play" Stipanovich has been hampered since preseason with knee troubles which have limited his action to one exhibition game Race Driver Loses Control Kills Two AUBENAS France (UPI) — Rally driver Lars-EnTorph and a Swedish compatriot were killed while watching the Monte
