Jamie Tabish Tribune Staff W nter For 4 H members John Harris and John Chase w inning a Grand Champion nbbon for showmanship at the Salt Lake County Fair was only part of the excitement Both boys spent months feeding bathing and exercising their animals to prepare them for the fair — and it paid off In the Senior Beef Showmanship division Mr Hams from Sandy won Grand Champion While Mr Chase from Murray won Grand Champion in the Sheep Show manship div lsion After the excitement of the judging took place several of the children spent the follow mg evening watching as their sheep pigs ana steers were sold at an auction According to Mr Harris the auction is important to competitors because it is the only way they can profit from their initial investment “It can cost anywhere up to $1300” Mr Hams said This year he spent $850 to purchase his steer and an additional $250 for grooming equipment and feed “It s nice to break even but it's even better to come out with a little profit to help w ith next year's steer" Mr Hams said After purchasing his steer in September Mr Harris worked w ith a halter to teach the animal to walk with its head held high A show stick was used to teach the steer o stand with its feet flat Judges pay close attention to these features when the steer is being shown A winning steer is not only raised to impress the judges but also the meat buyers Knowing when to feed a steer is as valuable as knowing when to stop “Basically a steer stops growing when its about 17 months old" Mr -- Hams said “At this age the steer has gained all its meet and muscle and will onlv gam fat if continuallv fed " “It gets real exciting watching everyone show their animals and watching the different styles of the judges" Mr Hams said “I like working with the animals and all the people I meet while I m doing it ” In addition to the steers pigs and sheep were also judged and sold at names his sheep and therefore doesn t get attached “I just look for the end profit” he said Mr Hams and Mr Chase will both go on to compete at the Utah State Fair in September the fair Mr Chase 17 has been showing sheep since he was 9 Using a radio and a harness Mr Chase has spent an hour a day for more than a month exercising his sheep The radio helps prepare the sheep for the noisy atmosphere of the fair he said Adding that it is important the sheep are comfortable being touched by people so they wont jump when handled by the judges Mr Chase has spent hours bathing sheering feeding and exercising the sheep to get them strong and muscular for the competition “You want the sheep to look uniformed” Mr Chase said First we use the electrical sheers and then hand sheers to get them to look thick " The sheep are checked w ith a ruler to make sure their wool is no longer than one inch This helps the judges differentiate between the animals muscles and wool After a sheep is weaned from its mother it is started on the Crep Food Program w hich allows it to eat 24 hours a day Mr Chase explained “You want to show the sheep at 100 to 130 pounds because that's what the packers want them to be” Mr Chase said One would think after raising a sheep or a steer that you would become attached to the animal But according to Mr Chase he never — lntjne Stuff Photo by Don Mitter John Harris left and John Chase have spent months raising and training sheep and steer for the
