| Show V T la' boll Lake T ribuiit t nCaj Aig uat Jit' 1 fctd MSt The British reggae of UB40 returns to Park West on Saturday By Sieve Morse Boston Globe riler 1 he L'mitd States and I tgland share similar musical tastes but the two countries could be in separate galaxies as far as I B40 is concerned 1 he British reggae band has scored a dozen lop 10 hits in Eng land but none in the United States Its an imbalance band members hope to remedy this sununer That s one of the reasons we re doing a long American tour this tune says UB40 guitarist Robin Campbell We stayed away last year because we were pretty busy in but we want to give America another try " (UB40 performs outdoors at ParhWest Resort on Saturday at 7 30 p m ) Not that UB4Q are unknown this side of the Atlantic They v e been touche favorites SiuCe the Socially conscious reggae on their first in the early 80s 'Jhose came after they taught themselves to play instruments as a way to escape poverty in industrial Birmingham They of-le- ’ Eu-rop- e chose the name UB40 as a symbolic geslurt it was the number on the British unemploy ment form The biracial band has since built a cult following But chait-wis- e theyve still only had two nuuor American hits — the lilting Red Red Wine’ which went to No 34 on the Billboard charts in 1083 and a duet with the Pretenders Chrissie H tide on the Sonny & Cher tune i Got You babe” which went to No 28 in 1085 'iheir frustrations with the U S became more ev ident w Leu they saw ' I Got You Babe” go to No 1 in 1 2 other countries In a recent phone interview from Birmingham Campbell said American commercial radio is so categorized and pigeonholed that many of the white stations w on t play our mu-bibecause they think were play mg an ethnic block music And many of the black stations m Amerna won t play us because they think w e re a black foreign band and they just want to play American groups ” UB40 s latest bid for a hit is anoth ‘ ‘ c Japanese film combines sex with tax evasion By Terry Orme Tribune Film Writer A Taxing Woman” is a delightfully wry comedy about two of life s in evitdbilities — sex and taxes Written and directed by Juzo Itami the Japanese filmmaker who made such Film review splash in the United States last year A Taxing W oman’ ith "Tampopo opens Friday at Cinema In Your face 45 W' Broadway for a limited run Itami begins his film with a prologue about how tax evasion is Ja pan 6 national pastime The more people evade taxes the more taxes rise and the more evasion increases It s a vicious cycle Tax agents in Japan the film suggests make their American counterparts seem almost helpful by comparison Nobuko Miyamoto — who played the aspiring noodle chef ui "Tam-popo- " and who m real life is Mrs Itami — portrays Ryoko Itakura a freckle-faceagent for the JRS Japanese Revenue Service Her small stature and an cowlick behe th“ fact that Kyoko is relentless in her pursuit of tax evaders Ryoko works her way up the rungs of the tax collector s ladder She busts mom and pop grocery stores then nabs crooked pinball parlors and finally gets her chance at real estate tycoons gangsters and politicians on tiie lake Divorced and a chronic workaholic she calls her son to give him instructions on how to a w d pint-size- d microwave his own dinner Her mind is always on catching the big fish m the tax ev asion pond She meets her match in the suave Hideki Gondo (Tsutomu Yamazaku womanizer and proprietor of an adult hotel (called Lov e Hotels" in Japan! Gondo has connections in places high and low — politicians and gangsters — and he keeps a string of lov ers to help him destroy evidence of underreporting his massive income Ry oko finds Gondo s financial maze impenetrable They engage in a game of cat and mouse — she asks tricky questions he deftly avoids answering them truthfully They find themselves enjoying this encounter immensely and later continue the discussion at a bar where they uncover something they have in common neither of them hav e enough time for the son each loves When Ryoko gets another promotion and Gondo makes a tactical error ui cov enng his tracks — he breaks up with one of his lovers and she turns informant — the stage is set for another encounter Gondo is set for the siege of tax investigators but he underestimates their resolve Finally the slippery Gondo may have met his match in the freckle-faceRyoko d "A Taxing W'oman" is a thoroughly delightful variation on the comedy and a riotous bend-uof modern life m Japan This comedy moves at a much faster clip than “Tampopo" the comedy about cooking the perfect noodle The characterizations are more endearing as well “Tampopo" was no fluke Itami seems to be getting better and better “A Taxing Woman" is in Japanese with English subtitles p tr duet wi'h B d ui id & bv u! tuiii ii piui 1 iicordid by Loma Bum it m iyT2 We know ('hussy frviu day s of Did says C all pieli Slit took tour as her suppoit act in lVb'J ir U U K she eUdyji bald We sliOad GO a song together it took us f iv e y t rb to both get the tune but it w os bo successful we had to do another 'She next wanted to do '1x4 b Make a bdty an old Billy Paul nutii her But we hated it with a veu geanee And all the tune we uggebt ed Breakfast in Bed which bhe hated with a vengeance — until we bent her a demo that bhe play ed for fnendb who liked it " 1 he new single albo reflects LB40b gradual move away from a bteady ' dose of 'politics Their new al I B40 leanb toward high bum spirited reggae iove bongs rather than the brooding songs about racism hungry childrtn suicide v lotuns and class oppi ession that lint d theu t arly records There remain a couple of socially astute tracks esper tally ' which is Gontaunnating Mmdo about blind sb But tliese are in the distinct minority It gets realty hard to w rite political bongs that appeal on a universal basis but say things which haven t been said all eddy ' Campbell notes More of our songs now aie about personal relationships Five ytars ago we would have hem embarrassed to w nte songs about personal relationships But now we ve all got them — or hav e lost them W e e just all lived a little more ' Frankly J ve gotten a little cynical i bout the potency of say ing wliat you want to say in a song The vast majority of people who listen to our music don t give a damn about what w e re singing about i know some do — they come up and tell us w e e changed their opinion on something — but most don t This however doesii t mean UB40 regrets any of the leftist lyrics of the past And there s still a pride that they ve been able to sneak them onto radio stations at least back home in England “bo many records get banned on Bntibh radio because of their political content' Campbell adds ‘But we tend to say things more subtly so they get on the air Some of our songs beem obvious like 'Madame Medusa which w as about Maggie Thatcher though it didn t mention her hv name But the English Beat did a song Stand Down Margaret and that got banned UB40 also flexed their politns by playing Ereedomfest held in Lon a ?
